Is there any difference between a 1986 engine and an 1988 one? If so, what are they? Are the SL and vacationer the same car? If not, what are the differences?
Finally, how does the series II differ from the series I?
Series 1 n/a Motors don't have oil and water galleries for the turbo. Other than that, no differences.
SL's and Vacationers are optioned slightly different.
Trim and option changes between the SL's, Exec's and Berlina's I have no idea about. I know of a few Calais changes between series 1 and 2. Thats about it.
Sorry to be vague
Cheers
Jake
I bought an SL Turbo on saturday.
ex chaser, awesome woo
i thought the 86 blocks were a bit stronger as well....series one and series two have different radiatorsseries one had a 2 core series two had 3 core...other than that just slight trim differences
Click the scales.....you know you want to!!!!
Fair to say the differences are few and far between thats for sure. Looking at them beside eachother you would struggle to notice the difference, tho its a good bet that the series 2 would have retained more of its upper trim layer for reasons unknown

Okay, thanks guys, but how do I know if I'm buying a series I or series II? Are the later model VL's (1987,88 etc) series II engines?
series 2 started in the mid 87 so that could be an idea
my web sitestuff on the XF throttle body conversion, calais interior and lots of other junk!
whoa this thread hasnt been added to for nearly 2 years!!! thread resurection hey stew!

Come on down and see the idiot right here.
You aint up to Fudge all buddy
Yes you could tell by the Vin the 6th Letter would be F G or H
(F-1986 G-1987 H-1988)
Also on one of the complance plates would have Built: "MONTH". "YEAR"
the turn from S1-S2 happend some time mid-late 1987 tho not alot of people know when it really happend due to they didnt bring all these changes in in one big hit they happend over months
heres the major diff between the two
this is wat s2 has diff
Interor:
padded glove box
solid headrest
seat rails are able to be unbolted
velour had a better design
dash cluster was black (every other model had the blue square lines)
Buttons were put on seats
vents for the heater were colour coded to the dash
centre console was velour where s1 was leather type
Engine:
was built ready for a turbo
the belt for the alternator was smaller (first of some s2 had the s1 belts but from i think march 1987 they changed to the smaller ones)
power steering pipe was run differant and gave better responce
Pwr steering pump same brand just made diff
Alternater (most fitted with bosch but some had hitachi wasnt just for the calais model)
you forgot that s2 had a cable type auto shifter not the linkage
There is series 1 and 2 rb30 engine, and the differences have been said above. But there is no such thing as a series 1 or 2 VL. There is just some slight differences between the year models...
I think the series 2 rb30 motor came in them in 1987.

would be more then i mentiod but thats all i can think of
and as above said is correct vl is only model (i think) that didnt have everything introjuced in one big bang was brought in over the many years
some people class year as telling difference in S1, S2 others engine or interior
Thread dig. Im about to buy an RB30e to rebuild and turbo. I want to know if the series 2 blocks (the ones with the oil and water galleries for the turbo) have an 8 on the end of the engine number and if any one has any photos of the oil and water galleries position on the block so i can locate them.
