Default VL Cuts out... Any ideas?

I'm sorry if this post is in the wrong spot but you will notice this is my first post...

So im 3 big days into owning a commodore...

So the story goes like this: (day 1)
    1. Purchased a VL commodore Executive
    2. 250m from the old owners house it cuts out
    - Has fuel
    - Cranks over nicely
    - Has no spark
    3. Did a quick check on the CAS Plug and looked like it has vasoline on it or something. Checked other plugs
around ignition side of things and everything seems in good working order.
    4. Got a car trailer and towed it home
    5. For a laugh the next day i went out and turned the key and it started... Grrrrrrr (Day 2)
    6. Took it for a spinand about 15 minutes later same deal had a small cough, and cut out.
    7. Pushed it home cause i was about 200 meters away from my house this time. Thank God!!!
    8. Same deal no spark
    9. Today i started it and it run for about 30 minutes on the driveway no worries. I have heaps of skylines so
i put a series 3 dissy in the commodore and got nothing. No spark... (Day 3)
    10. Put the old dissy back in the commodore, starts fine, and is already re-timed...
    11. Registered here...

    Things i noticed:
    1. The dissy cap had a massive split in it but i just put one of the R31 dissy caps on and it is happy for now
    2. The power transistor or whatever that this that is bolted to the dissy has bubbled plastic on it.
    - Can the R31 PT be put on?
    3. I am leaning towards the CAS, but is there something else i have missed because we are talking VL and
    not R31?
    - Is the CAS in a R31 CAS the same as the VL CAS?

I would say cas to, it is very common when it is stuffed it will run fine until it gets hot then die and won't start until it cools down, you can take the dissy cap off and the metal plate out and see if it is all covered in red/brown dust, this indicates the bearing/seal is stuffed to. the skyline one is different. but the transistor should be the same.
