Question Need help with evap hose connections to charcoal cannister

I just replaced all the evaporative hoses (used a diagram posted elsewhere) near the petrol tank and filler (rotted), but am getting a sound of pressurised air going into the petrol tank (gets louder when low), and a smell of raw petrol. So I pulled the carbon canister out today to see that no hose is going to the bottom elbow connection. Is that correct? I cannot find any stray hoses anywhere near that area. It's possible the previous owner took it off?? Any help (a digram of the canister and hose connections would be gr8) would be highly appreciated. Cheers

It won't let me edit the original post: I found in other sections of this site that the cannister is open on the bottom so it can drip water converted from vapour. What still remains is why am I getting the sound of air bubbling through my petrol and the raw smell of petrol. Also, why did my fuel gauge stop working after renewing those rear hoses?? Weird stuff...
