headlight pattern on high beam

how is the light on the road when on high beam supposed to look?

on my VL theres a lot of light just in front of the car as if both fillaments on the twin fillament globe are staying on, or its staying on low beam

the globes cant be put in the wrong way round so whats happening?

mine is sort of just like a line in front of the car. there is practicall no side stuff at all. and when im on low beam. sometimes i have to check to make sure they are really on
