Default Removing BW78 diff pinion nut

    Hi,

I had planned to change the pinion seal in my borgwarner diff yesterday but couldn't get the pinion nut off even with a rattle gun.

    Any ideas?

I welded a bit of flat steel to the side of some square tube, then drilled a couple of holes in the flat steel so it would bolt to one side of the flange on the front of the diff then used a socket and breaker bar. The nut comes off a lot easier when you can hold the flange with something.

yeah you need to make a bar to bolt the flange to, ive used stilsons in the past, mark the nut also to get it back in the correct position on retightening. use breaker bar, youll never get it off with a rattle gun, all you will do with a rattle gun is stuff ya diff gears up with the shuddering it gets from the rattle gun. plus it takes a lot to tighten it up to the correct position, maybe a bar on your breaker bar will be necessary.
did i say never use a rattle gun on your diff? it stuffs the gears.

Yeah I only rattled for about 10 seconds as I thought it wouldn't be the best for the gears.

I have fitted everything back up, its only a minor leak at the moment and the cars not a daily driver (6000km/year) so if it gets worse I will make up a plate and a bar, too do it properly. I also have access to a mates hoist which is a big help for these jobs.

    Thanks for the comments.
