hey guys,
discovered that my car is running to rich on fuel and don't know how to change it?
eg: very strong fuel smell from exhaust
please help!
thanks
not even sure if this is something you can change?
I have no idea!
Could be airflow meter playing up, or another major issue could be coolant temp sensor. These two items can play havoc with mixtures. Easy to swap for another airflow meter to see if that is the issue, otherwise could be coolant temp sensor giving wrong signals to computer and it thinking the car is still cold and throwing in abundant amount of fuel even when engine warm.
its normal for the inside of the tailpipe to be black when using unleadsd
o2 sensor as well... coolant temp sensor, air leaks in the Intake piping between AFM and Throttle body,
I only recently sold my VLT which did 10's on quarter. I have not been without a VL for the last 15 years until now. There are many things that can cause your problem. You just have to work through them one by one. Goodluck.
Forgot to mention, bought new spark plugs the other money, maybe 1-2 months ago, the car has barely been driven, but when I went to check the spark plugs the other day, they were all black! does this have any relationship to the richness of the mixture?
sooty plugs is engine running rich man. o2 sensor will be covered in soot as well so take it out and clean it,
by cleaning the o2 sensor, could this maybe fix the problem..?
because new o2 sensors are like $150...
possibly but i would think it has become sooty from the other means,.... (Coolant Temp Sensor, Air leak in intake pipeing after AFM, Vacuum Leaks, Leaking injector, AFM not set Properly to right spec (Ohms 375 Resistance is factory) Blocked Air Filter)
U will have to go over it all starting with cheapest part and work up.
Goodluck Man let us know
checking your intake pipe for leaks or blocked filter is obvously the cheapest been free. if any mates have a vl try there AFM. better then buyin one for nothing. then id say check your injectors for leaks. then coolant temp sensor, o2 sensor and so on after. goodluck
Cmon mate, we are going around in circles. We have given you heaps of info to go on with. Also, do yourself a favour and go and buy a Gregory's VL Service Manual and have a read. 15 years ago when I bought one, I had a read and everytime I learnt something new. To this day I still have it, and I have just recently sold my 10sec VL but I still use or lend out my Service Manual as one of my best mates has just started the VL owning cycle
15 years of VL's and there are always many options which could be causing an issue. A process of elimination buddy. Goodluck.
hey all!
just updating you, there is no leak in the air intake piping and the air filter is fine!
The distributor cap was a bit clogged with gunk shit but that came out alright and it seems fine now apart from a bit of wear.
NEW SYMPTOM!
This started happening the other day, when idleing, after about 10 seconds the revs start dropping until it completely cuts out. Clutch in/out does not affect this, stationery or not doesn't affect it either. when the accelerator isn't keeping the revs up, it will slowly die.
is this related?
thanks!
fuel pressure erg my vr does the same thing its th e pressure reg flooding the car and allowinng fuel in threw the vaccum line try that out
unplug your AFM and try start the car if it starts and idles the AFM is stuffed., plug it in while it is running and it starts doing what it has been doing the Afm is the problem.
Process of elimination Man
Yeah, did that the other day, it's not the problem. Made no difference whether it was plugged in or not.
So, I now know it's not the following are all fine:
- Distributor cap
- Intake piping between AFM and throttle body
- Air filter
- AFM
Leaving possibilities of:
- o2 sensor
- Leaking injectors
- Coolant temp sensor
- Fuel pressure regulator
- + others probably
I got suspended for 2 weeks from school, so I'm going to have heaps of time on my hands, but I won't have my dad around to help me.
Hopefully i'll be able to get this sorted by myself, or at least find the problem!
Got one of those Gregory's VL service books off my Uncle the other day, seems very informative!
Tyson.
