Hey guys, heaps of diff questions on here I know and I've had a flick through them all but none seem to answer my question so here goes. (Take into account I know very little about diffs, so if i say somthing dumb just let me know hah)
I've got a 2L berlina that now has 5L EFI out of a VP in it and I want to build up a diff to suit.. I seem to get the idea that ford 9 inch diffs are heavy, unnecisary and wildly expensive for a good one so im gana try stick with a commodore diff ... I want a 28 spline LSD that fits nicely underneath.. My original idea was to get a VP/VN live axle v8 LSD and shorten it but now that I've had a look at some posts on here i've been put off .. and im in NZ so there is a very small likely hood that I can find a VL V8/Turbo Diff any time soon (rare as crap over here supposidly) so Im in a bit of a situation. Here is my question -
Could I get 28 spline axels made up and an aftermarket centre (I've heard ramp type LSDs are the go) throw them in my current diff housing (25 spline one) and have a diff that would be pritty damn good? I'm looking to spend at the most $4000 NZ and I want something that wont s*** its pants the first time i give it a bit of a go.
If that wouldnt work or isnt a good idea could you please let me know why and what a better idea would be? I've no experience in this sort of thing and any help would be appreciated.
Cheers!
for $4000 you could buy a vlt diff from oz and ship it there.. you can get lsd 28 pline centers off ebay for bout 350 bucks. i just bought one and the seller rebuilds them all the time. brand new 28 spline axles on ebay for $700. if you buy diff gears id suggest 3.45:1 ratio. i have 3.9:1 but the it revs higher when cruising. in nz that coul be an advantage i suppose. hope that helps a bit. oh and that should all bolt into your housing
The VL 28 spline axles (which are the only different/hard to get part) can still be had if you have a reasonable budget like that. At the worst you should be able to pick up a complete diff for $1K (which is pricey but depends on the hurry) and get it properly rebuilt from top to bottom for well under the remaining $3K.
They aren't easy to get, but the people who say they're hard to get want one for $100
