Just after some knowledge/advice/info, I've purchased my genuine vlt a8 motor it's completely stock however I havnt heard it running due to previous owner removing tappets and leaving it this way till I purchased it, upon further inspection I found that the threads in the head have been stripped, 1 has been redrilled and attemped to have a helicoil put in etc etc, I was told by a guy that does heads that these can be re-welded and tapped, anyone confirm this?
So anyway after thinking about it I've come to the decision to build the whole motor now instead of just doing the head and get it running etc etc,
I'm in no rush and would like to do it once do it rite,
my goal is to run 11"s however I'm not set on this number, I was told I'll need aprox 270 rwkw, however I'm not going to commit to this as I have no idea of a price this will set me. Before I found out I'd need to go a full rebuild I my goal was to aim for flat 13"s mid 12"s
So what I'd like is an average aprox price guide for the above (motor work only) for my aim of 11"s and aim of mid 12"s
what's I get a aprox estimate on price I'd like some help with a parts and price guide so when I see an engine builder I know what to ask, but one thing at a time ATM

bump... anyone with usefull information or personal experience
- --FS - SI VL Calais Turbo (no Motor) Good Project -- -
first thin i would do since head is off anyway is strip it back to the bare block and get it honed and cleaned then you no what you have to work with and if the block has any problems cause if thats bad theres no point in even trying
if the holes arnt already oversize drill them oversize for larger studs this will clamp the head better but dont go 1/2" these might be to big
for the rebuild clean the block magnaflux it then deck it true to crank tunnel bore and align hone mains maby go 4bolt's new bearings bore it out regrind crank resize rods new pistons and moly rings (make sure you get the bores honned to 600 grit for moly rings) new lifters new pusrods new valves new seats new springs new retainers spring seats recut new bronze valve guides deck the head but not too much port the heads a little then match port the manifold
this should see a high figure with the right cam and carbie
o i forgot get a arp stud kit for the whole short block
Its an injected motor
not the rb30 in the patrol which is carbie :P
bump ???
a list n some prices would be a great help

How much do you want to spend??? This is the first question as there is heaps of stuff you can do to a motor.
I just rebuilt an A8 factory vl turbo motor and cost me, well not much at all..
You say that where the head bolts to the block, these threads are screwed yeah? Well just get them drilled and tapped to half inch. Dont listen to the bloke above vr1uz-fe. He does not know what he is on about!
Im a mechanic and have done it before.
When you get the 1/2" threads tapped into your block you will need to make the holes in the head bigger also as to allow it to take 1/2" head studs.
so what you need to do is:
First get this done, threads in block tapped to 1/2"
Get head bolt holes re-drilled to take the 1/2" studs.
Get 1/2" ARP HEAD STUDS
Then you need to decide if you want forged pistons, Liquid forged pistons or just aftermarket stock pistons
Strip the block down, Get it:
Decked
Honed
Cleaned (Acid Dipped)
O-Ringed
Blue printed
Then you have a choice to make:
Pistons
Rings
Rods
You will need:
Rod Studs (arp do these)
Head gasket
Get some head work done:
Port and polished
Camshaft
roller rockers (Not needed)
Over sized valves
Heavy duty valve springs
you will also need it to be assembled and balanced
There is heaps of what you can do, this is just some of the work from the top of my head!
There is no push rods in an rb30
11's can and have been achieved on a bog stock $150 wrecker N/A bottom end with good bolt ons.
if you're after 11's - the money for a motor rebuild would, in my opinion, be better spent on bolt ons/driveline![]()
Well at this stage the head I currently have can't be tapped out to 1/2 inch there well n truely ####ed, so I think I'm on the hunt for a new head...
I was told I don't need forged pistons for 270rwkw but I do want the bottom end to have a freshin up, I was told with some head work and bolt ons I can reach my goal,
will a t3 high flow do the job?
I don't have a price range however ATM I'm looking to work out for a cost on the motor alone, diff n manual transmission are done, n I'm allowing 1500-2000 for exhaust and cooler

This is true vn-luke, however he will garantee want more power! As we all do.
So if you do all this work and then want more power you can then just upgrade bolt ons and fuel system etc etc. And it wont break in a hurry.
Yes N/A bottom ends stock can handle 300rwkw But if its not tuned correctly it wont last long at all.
ok so motor is coming out this weekend and id like to know if ive got enough money to get this done...
so with the list from your help so far we have:
Strip the block down, Get it:
Decked
Honed
Cleaned (Acid Dipped)
O-Ringed
Blue printed
How much am i looking at (aprox) for the above?
Then you have a choice to make:
Pistons
Rings
Rods
I Dont think i need to go forged bottom end, but i have no personal experience with this,, thoguhts?? costs difference??
You will need:
Rod Studs (arp do these)
Head gasket
Cost for above?
Get some head work done:
Port and polished
Camshaft
Over sized valves
Heavy duty valve springs
What size cam, crow, wade? Costs???
Bolt Ons
Again im not sure but if i get my Stock Turbo hi-flowed will this help me achieve my aim of 300? < cost?
Gteck (no holes cooler) Aprox $600?
3" Exhaust $1000??

best bet is to walk into your local engine reco shop and tell them wat you want done. Im looking at $3000 for the bottom end including forged rods, pistons and all the reco work.
Yeah I know the engine builder, but I wanna no exactly what I want n an aprox cost before I go speak to him

Products from Rotorua Import Pro Shop R.I.P.S check out the rips website he sells rb30's worldwide and for good reasonhe allways has at least 3 or 4 cars from europe in his shop being built he knows his shit and the prices are pretty good.but it will give you and idea on what you want done
