hi all a mate of mine has just brought a vl and it idles fine but when under acceleration it seems to be missing a beat or two and has no go!!!just wanting to see if anyone else would know what the problem might be!!i was thinking afm or maybe try to advance the timing!!
I would guess AFM or CAS
Dont touch timing leave it at 15 degrees try another AFM. this is what happens when the AFM is failing.
It could be the timing. This happened in my old vl and i borrowed a timing light from a mate and ajusted it the best i could and it made it run so much better.
I'd be looking at the AFM!
Nobody wants to play with me
doesnt hurt to try a timing light if you have one.
Check your ignition leads at night & look for any sparks - easy for these to short out - also VL's are bad for EFI electrical connections - if the boots are broken you can buy new connections & boots - put some dielectric / silicone grease on all connections as this is the biggest problem with these - especially the one at the distributor as water will get in & damage the bearings. Then you get rust dust over the pickup & she had it - all over red rover... The grease works by promoting a connection - stopping corrosion - you can put it on anything & it should be part of your toolkit. Supercheap sells it in small sachets for putting on ignition leads & the like - Repco can sell you a larger tube but its not cheap - around $60 a tube. Works great in light sockets & anything electrical. Nowadays with computers - they are running very low voltages & any corrosion will cause you problems - this was the first thing we used to do with a VL when it came into my workshop & most times it would fix the problem. If you are tight for money you can seal up the connections without replacing the boots by taping them up with rubber self vulcanizing splicing tape - available from your household electrical suppliers (240v). They usually always have it. You stretch it & it heats up & vulcanizes itself & wont come off... Good luck
