hi guys i have just had my head done on my rb30 fully tuned and installed by my mechanic and now hes stumped because first my water pump went then radiator crackd just fixed that started it up and snapped a piston ring is it common for everything to go at one in the rb30 because i havnt heard of it before or is it just one thing causeing these problems any help would be much appreciated
one thing, S*IT Mechanic......
weird for a ring to snap.. how the ringland
usually detonation cracks ring lands or rings themselves.
Water-pump and radiator could be just coincidence man
if piston is damaged on top surface like it has rapidly cooled and has chunks missing it could be a coolant leak into the bore
e.g. incorrectly installed headgasket or warped head (not tensioned down correclty OR heat warped)
radiator was old then coincidence if radiator was brand new then i would say related
cheers guys dont think it would be a warped head it brand new cost over 1000 bux in work on it
its hard to diagnose things like this unless you have checked compression is good first before dismantling!~
oh and rings shouldnt snap with correct installation e.g right way up~!
cheers checked compresion this morning and 6 is very low thanks for all the help just figured it be easier to chuck it on blocks for a few months on my way out to pick up an rb 25 to chuck in it thanks again
See this happen all the time , chuck a new head on an old engine , an everything else falls apart .
At 43 a wealth of info , but still heaps to learn
This sort of thing happens a lot. New head gives better compression which puts more load on rings and bearings. If the rings had a bit of wear in them then they will fail. If the radiator cracked and the waterpump failed as you said, then it is quite likely that the new head has cracked or warped from the heat. Piston rings will loose their tension and leak if they get too hot also.
if on ly one cyclinder down dont assume its the head (not that this matters with rb25 replacement)
could be the tp of the block on number six is not flat
remove head and check with a straight edge
or
incorrectly fitted or damaged gasket
either could cause coolant entrance into the bore especially on 1 or 6
thanks heaps again guys car is goin on blocks this arvo new motor is on the stand getting stripped and fully rebuilt guess im sorted for xmas break thanks again have a good xmas drive safe
