the basic unleaded petrol will soon be replaced by a fuel containing 10% alcahol. its doubtful if this will be OK for the VL, the octane will be about the same but the VL wasnt designed to cope with alcahol in the fuel, its effect on the 25 year old fuel system is unknown
if theres a buildup of water in your petrol tank, the alcahol will probably cause it to mix with the petrol

If your concerned you can always pay the few cents more and go for premium.

Yep go premium, you don't really spend any extra cash as you do get extra miles out of the fuel.

i put unleaded in my vl.why u ask?cause its cheaper and doesnt need to run on premium


what makes you think alcahol mixes water with fuel?water is like oil in water it seperates

I only ever use premium since i put the turbo on the high-comp setup.
Have heard they can ping if using low octane fuel but i dont know
