I've got a problem with trying to refit the timing belt. The book I have doesnt show me a clear picture of where the camshaft gear timing mark and the crankshaft gear timing mark need to line up. Ive tried refitting it several times with no luck...I was hoping some one might be able to give me a few pointers, tips or any useful info would be great. Thanks
On a vl there is only a mark for the crank gear. There is a certain amount (i think 57) of teeth on the belt between the marks on cam and crank.
I had this problem when I started doing my own repairs.
When I replaced the water pump somehow I moved the cam shaft gear so that it was out of alignment by a couple of teeth I got a bit confused but realised the cam shaft pulley had a white dot painted on it probably by the manufacturer.
All I did was ensure the white dot was upermost and top dead centre or in the 12 o'clock position.
I just lined it up as best I could and stood back to check that it looked to be perpencicular.
If the Rotor button is facing number one friring position and the Crankshaft is is lined up on it's correct position then it should all be lined up and ready to recieve the new timing belt.
The timing belt can be a bit fiddly especially withn the spring and using a ratchet spanner to get the small timing belt pulley wheel in the correct position.
but once you've mastered the technique the belt will go on perfectly. Just make sure that as you face the motor the belt is tight on the right hand side.
If it is make sure all the marks are lined up and the cam shaft pulley hasn't moved. Then ajust the belt to the correct tension.
Don't do it too tight as it makes a noise and also the belt can wear a fair bit.
If it's your first time to replace the belt don't use the old one bung on a newie.
