    Question buying a vl "what to look for"

    hey im new to the forum i curently own an 88 prelude (for sale)... gonna buy a runaround car for a year and might end up modding it.. the car is clean ive known it for a few years and its my mates so i know i wont get jipped... but he dosnt know much about vcars. just drives it. it had an exhaust and thats it for mods. i know its not been properly serviced but im getting my mechanic to look it over and see whats wrong if anything. now what have u found hats crops us usualy?? what should i look for?? how do i tell if its gonna sart breaking as soon as i buy it???
    the paint is silver good and colour coded bumper strips so it looks quite nice. no dents or rust and he will give it to me for $1500 but mechanical is what im woried about.. what should i look for?? that my mechanic dosnt see directly.. ie drving noises yada yada chears guys

    Cancer is the main thing as has been mentioned. Most VL's suffer from it in various degrees. Under the doors is also a likely spot.

    Other things include the head, get it tested to make sure it's not warped or cracked. Universal joints also don't stand the test of time so check there is still some play in the driveshaft.

    oh and ive been tols to listen to the engin and if it ticks.. im guessing this is the cams or valvs?? what does this mean and how bad would that be?
    plus do all RB3os make that higher pitched sound reving after 3000rpm?

    the ticking is most likely the lifters.....sometimes just changing the oil will fix that.......high pitched whining???i don't know but i haven't noticed any whining!!!

    nah its not a whiing noise its almost screatchy.. hard to explane. the r31 rb30 usualy has the sound. its the high rev noise. does the vl have a second set of valvs opening around 3 or something? the note changes from the deeper noise to a very open souning scream... wandering if this is normal or a worn engin sound. ..well mechanic is checking her out tomorow so will see what he sais ...
