Default How do you replace the distributor bearing?

I'd like to know if someone could give me a run down on how to replace the bearing of the distributor on a VL.

I've taken out the Crank Angle Sensor and I've got no idea on what I should do.

    Any advice would be great:-)

    No smart arse comments please:-)

easy as dude, unplug the CAS connector, but dont take off the plug leads. Remove the plate that sits underneath where the CAS boot is, theres two philips screw driver screw to undo, remove the boot. Now either side of the distributor cap, there is two screws on either side, remove these next. The whole cap will lift off, now grab a 10mm socket and a socket wrench, undo the bolt that goes through the rotor and remove the rotor. Now undo the next 2 sets of screws you can see holding a big round brass brass plate and remove this also.

Slide this off, now slide off the round cylinder thingo that goes through the CAS disk. Remove the disk in a way so u remember which way it went in, very important.

Now undo the 3 screws holding the CAS unit itself in place and presto there we go. Check to see if there is any red dust around the main bearing that you'll now see and replace it if necessary. job done...

oops, sorry dude, just realised you meant the bearing.

im pretty sure all you need to do is undo the bolt that goes through the sliding tab that adjusts the timing. This will let the distributor housing slide out and you can knock the bearing out from the other side.

    Thanks Hell_Bound for your enthuisiasm.

I'm not sure on how to get the bearing out.

I have no problems pulling the complete distributor out and stripping it down as you mentioned but I've never stripped down the dizzy any further than removing the CAS.

My Dizzy has red dust and I really need to get a new bearing installed before the CAS stuffs up again.

I was hoping not to damage the distributor shaft etc and hence asking for advice as there are no details in my VL workshop manual of how to step by step get a damaged bearing out.

    Any advice would be great.

holdfast the easiest way to do this.
    step 1:Remove crank angle plug.
step 2: Take dist cap off ( leave leads on )
step 3: Mark dist and head so you know which way to put it back in.
step 4: Take the rotor button off.
step 5: Take the gold plate off.
step 6: Remove piece that rotates rotor button (held in with phillips head screw)
step7: take plate out VERY IMPORTANT TO EITHER MARK TOP WITH TEXTER OR REMEMBER WHAT WAY GOES UP.
step 8: undo dist and pull out of head CAREFULLY
step 9: Undo CAS and remove.
step 10: Undo the power transistor on the side of dist has 2 pin plug.
step 11: Undo the bearing with phillips head screws.
step 12: Push shaft out by placing in vice and puting the piece on that the rotor button goes on ( ONLY TAP DONT SMASH)
step 13: Lightly tap dist on ground with the face.
step 14: Pick old bearing up and throw as far as you can.
step 15: Put back together same way came apart.
It is highly suggested to change the CAS at same time as red dust can kill the CAS. Make sure you put plate back in the right way. Also put dist back in same spot where came out. Check timing should be about 15 degrees.

    Default narcho your guidance worked

Thanks for giving me the good oil about removing the bearing from the distributor.

I replaced it no worries at all and I'm happy as.

You should of seen the old bearing it looked like something out of a archeological dig.

Any way I stripped the whole dizzy down, cleaned it all up spotless and replaced it.

My VL now goes like the wind, I took her for a burn and she goes so fast I nearly sh.. myself

    Thanks again
