hey guys, im tossing up the idea of supercharging my VL atm instead of turbo. i wanna be different and prefer superchargers ( call me strange if u will ). anybody done this to theirs? hows it go?
Sorry mate I'd love to answer your questions. But if you have a search they're all over the place.
i havn't actually been in one but i've heard that they go fairly hard but run out of puff at top end
yeh, i want my power down lower rather than top end. thats why i figure a supercharger, then u dont deal with anything like a turbo that just wont spool quick enough.
Ahh okay I'll answer.
With a High compression turbo conversion, which really isn't much different to the Supercharger- You won't have much trouble with spool times anyway. Boost will be coming on around 2k and you'll have full boost by 3k easily. Which in my opinion.. 3k was the optimum power band for the rb30e anyway.
If you were going to supercharge it I'd possible look into it further, and instead of going an SC14 blower off a toyota, the one commonly used with these conversions I'd go something slightly larger, that will not run out of puff and that won't leave you stuck in 6 months time when you've got a taste for boost and you want to upgrade.
The conversion kits from castlemaine rod shop for 1800 dollars are a quick fix, but they're not too cheap and I don't think they allow that much room for power steering/aircon. Now the conversions have been done for 600 dollars. By a second hand blower, fabricate your own mounts, get some custom piping made up and a pulley wheel made up and away you go.
I too thought about the idea for a while and toyed with it, thinking it'd be awesome fun, I've always loved the idea of Electric Clutches on the charger so you can turn it on/off. Turning it on and burning up the street and turning it off to cruise around normally. However, The idea of lower boost and an expandible asset (being the charger) Just didn't cut it for me. I'd heard that they didn't live as long when proned to higher heats/ Different pulley.. More boost etc. And that of course scared me off.
In all seriousness...I highly recommend the turbo conversion. A bit more involved. But damn you won't regret it, theres hardly any lag... It's not instant wheel spin.. But its awesome...
yeh we did a huge turbo conversion on a mates car and learned heaps, my old mans a mechanic and i learnin outta interest. he wants to do a supercharger and i want one, so hey put two and two together..... i've been looking at those bolt on superchargers that they import, then i'd make a custom manifold etc, get an aftermarket computer and all that. set it up right and i'd have a good package. i like that electronic clutch idea though....
