hi guys my vl is ticking away pretty bad from the top of my motor. When its cold it doesnt make a noise till its warm then it gets pretty loud. once its hot over a period it starts off not making a noise then gets louder and louder then stops. Then starts over again. Got told to put thicker oil in it so did the whole oil change and it made it louder. What ya think i should do
pull the rocker cover off and fire it up! let it warm up dont rev it as youl cop a face full of oil. try and pin point the sound. could be a dodgy lifter, check all rockers and rods for looseness and play. if its an rb30 just take it to the scrappy lol
common rb30 problem, noisy lifters, fresh oil and filter and a bottle of lifterfree usually does the trick, however it won't fix it immediately it takes time to work.
other options are replace lifters, remove lifters and have them properly cleaned.
other, check oil pressure to make sure the oil pump is not failing.
Nobody wants to play with me
regular oil changes will rectify this problem as it will clean the motor.
as stated noisy lifters is common. bet if u pull the rocker-cover it will b gummy as buggery
advised not to use engine flush either
Changing oil and covering up the noise wont reverse the damage. Remove the lifters and check the hardened surfaces for pitting and chipping. Remember that damage on one surface will affect the other.

give everything a spray with wd40 wheels brakes that should fix the squeaks
Hate to say it, but it's your lifters most likely. My missus was driving my 5.0L VL Calais around with music blaring for months, and then one day decided to tell me it was ticking a "little". When I filled up the oil, it took a whole 5 litres, and when I took it home to check it out, realised she had done the lifters! Silly girl! LOL
