Ok so I got a fully sick 3" tacho for dirt cheap and figured I'd throw it in the VL for shits and giggles, fully sick power boost (Cos' we all know 2 tachos in an auto gives it 500HP boost) & I actually have an issue I'd like to get resolved lol, despite what I know you're all thinking :P
So basically my fully sick tach works, idles fine, rev it and she goes up and down, and the shift light turns on at the pre-set moment for maximum quick-as-a-flash gear changes, well, since it's an auto my engine needs to be like OMG when do I change gear again, so the light reminds it!
Anyhoo, I drove off to my bro's to show him my fully sick shit, and as the shift light flashed at 3,000RPM, the gauge turned off. Wondering wtf was going on, it turned back on a few moments later! It also was turning off when I was turning my overdrive off/flooring it to drop down a gear, then when I re-activated overdrive/changed up a gear, it turned back on. Reversing was fine, though.
I joined green to the signal wire under the hood (neg side of coil), red to power (my power source was a grey wire w/ a red stripe under the panel to the right of/under the steering wheel which lit up upon ignition/start, then died after shutting the engine, which seemed perfect), white to power as well (since I don't mind the back light being on all the time), & black to earth as usual.
The only thing I can really think of, is my power connection being a bit dodgy, though it seemed fine on the test light? & the issue of turning off randomly/dropping gears/over drive is a bit odd.
So yeah, help me out ulehs!!! FULLY SIIIICK!!
Edit: YES, this actually happened, and I really do want to fix it lol.

It sounds like the tacho isnt real healthy. Perhaps it has a screw loose?
Possibly? I might have added too much rice too, it says to take the back off and add 1 cup rice to 2 cups of uleh, so I might have to try again.
My mate reckons it's an earthing problem, so I'll suss that out too. Might earth directly to the battery.

I earthed it to a screw under the right hand side of the dash (screw that holds the bottom of your dash together) though I have my switch for my amp grounded to the same screw and my amp/sub runs fine 99% of the time, though maybe having 2 grounds on 1 point as small as that screw might make it less reliable. When I get home I'll re-ground it to the battery and see how that goes. Either that or just find another screw/bolt under the dash that looks more reliable.

Ok re-wired the earth directly through the firewall & to the battery, & still having the same issue. I might see if I can suss out a different wire for the power since the wire I used (Grey w/ Red stripe) might be losing power for some reason. Does anyone know which wire in the cluster (Under the right hand side panel, near hood lever) is the ignition power wire? If I can suss that out, I'll know for sure that it's always getting power as long as my car is running.
Here's a more easily-readable list of the issues I'm having:
During idle, revs work all the way up to - so far - 3 - 4,000 RPM (Haven't tried higher since my car will blow up) & shift light works etc.
While driving, Tach works up to around 2.5 - 3,000 RPM, then turns off. Backlight turns off, needle resets to 0.
After driving for a few minutes, it will turn back on, usually when I rev past 2.5 - 3,000 RPM.
When braking/changing down a gear due to slowing down, or shifting down a gear due to accelerating, it turns off.
When I push Overdrive off (Orange light on dash turns on), the tacho fails.
Again, in neutral, everything works fine.

Sussed it! Well, my bro did.
He told me to try tapping the positive to the positive on my head unit since that will 100% always be on when my car is on, and off when the car is off etc, and viola, it works fine!
Now to cruise really slowly, slouched heaps far in my seat with dubstep playing while I rev my auto in neutral so the shift light keeps flashing. With a car load of guys with either crooked flat-rimmed hats, or rat's tails & singlets/flanno.

at first I thought your NA RB30 AUTO was producing way to much power for your "dirt cheap" tacho
I am so glad you solved your problem without any other JC forum members help, because that would just be embarrassing
living the life.
that sh!t should really suck the ladies in at the local high school! LOL, lmfao.
Nobody wants to play with me
I'm sure secretly there's someone with an NA Auto with a Monster Tach problem lurking behind his laptop, waiting for someone to post a question that they need answered so they avoid all flaming of the fire variety.
But yeah I fully drove past the japanese takeaway a few hours ago, and this chick was all like "AAAIIIIIII" and ran over to my car and was screaming and shit, and this buff jap dude with like, Yakuza tatts or some shit, was like "Hai" and yelled at me in Japanese while throwing rice at me, then he chased me in his 1JZ Supra but luckily I had my badass tacho to let me know when my auto will automatically change gears so I got away CLEEEEEEEEAN.
OH SHIT I just thought of something: Get this right. having 2 tachos, SHOULD IN THEORY, make my car DOUBLE it's RPM!! Like holy SHIT i'm busting over 10,000 RPM take off's in an NA 3.0L SHIT!!!!!
