    Default RB30 milky oil

I picked up a VL 5 speed today and it has milky oil in it, it's milky at the cap and the dip stick and its like a brownish color. My mate said it has a cracked head or head gasket and to try Chemiweld. Anyone have any ideas or experience with Chemiweld? Also is there any way to tell the difference between a cracked head and head gasket without pulling the engine apart?

not sure how to tell the difference but the most common issue with rb30's was to crack the head if the cooling system wasn't bled properly.
So i seriously doubt it was the gasket in the case of 99% of VL's
In day's gone by, i used to for a job, weld the heads up.

Try ol mate Carl at seven hills for a head job.

I was serious... but after you posted, i realise it came out wrong..... oops. Carl at head works seven hills, old mate of mine and my old business partner. Does good work.

Now if you were going to turbo that vl... then that head job would go hand in hand with a blow job! lol

Sounds like a cracked head. make sure your fluids are up, start her ,and let her idle until warm temperature [On my VL it's about 1/4 on the stock temp gauge, or 70 - 80 degrees celcius on my aftermarket gauge. anything more & it's either really really hot outside or you have a problemo.

Half is about where the temp should be sitting.

    Is it white?you said brown?

Post a pic up of oil.

Either way if it's a gasket or head do it rite the first time replace the gasket and reco the head at same time.

It's like a coffee color at the dipshit but more greyish under the oil cap and yeah i checked it before i bought it i picked it up as a project. I got half way through pulling it out tonight will finish the rest in the morning. is there anyway i can tell myself if its the head or the gasket once i have the head off?

don't b an idiot and try drive it.

its got a cracked head or gasket blown. (hence milky oil/water)

give it back and get your money back.. or pull the head and get it checked.

if its good get it machined and get another gasket and torque up the bolts in correct sequence and torque settings.

Like the others have said fix it properly, but a bit of personal info on Chemiweld, I had a VL Berlina company car back in the 80's, well actually the company had quite a few brand new VL's and maybe half suffered from cracked heads at one stage, the Berlina I had was soon due for replacement and it started to overheat and the oil turned milky, as it was going to be traded the mechanic said try the Chemiweld you will be surprised, well he popped in the Chemiweld and changed the oil and coolant and to my amazement it was like new, we traded it on a VR at the time and had to wait a couple of months for delivery and it never missed a beat during that time, and the oil was as clean as the day it was put in. The Holden dealer that did the trade commented on how well the car ran. But had it been my car I would have fixed it properly. But the Chemiweld does work or it did in my case.

Milky gearbox oil has something to do with like, water getting in somewhere or something I heard, not too sure on the details about gearboxes, though.

Perhaps the VL has been completely submerged in water. Did you buy it from a flood prone area ?
That may explain how water has got into both the engine and gearbox.

nah no flooding around here, unless they drove it into a dam im not sure how it would get submerged.

pump it out by pulling a hose at the rad(trans cooling lines) and run your car in idle untill its pumped out.

Have a mate watch it and as SOON as it stops, turn off your car as u can damage the box/converter.

i done it this way plenty of times. then undo all trans sump bolts and drop the pan.
New cork seal and seal her back up. new trans oil and boompa. done
