Default Stock VL diff to LSD conversion

Hey guys, my mate and I were discussing my baby at a mates party on the weekend, and he suggested that I look into doing an LSD conversion on the VL. At the moment it has the stock diff & only spins 1 wheel etc, but what I'm wondering is what's the benefit, if any, of running an LSD? I do like to give her a bit of a boot, and try to have some fun at lights etc, but the one thing I definitely don't want is a fully locked diff which chirps when I turn corners, cos, you know, I still want to be able to do a U-Turn. I do a fair bit of freeway driving but also alot of suburb/town driving/start & stop.

I am slowly developing a list of things I want to get done etc, but like all lists it will spiral out of control, & my mate (who just serviced my car at his shop) reckons I should go LSD too. What are the costs involved? Do I have to source a full VL turbo diff or can I get, say, 28 spline internals and have someone throw it all in? What would I have to change?

Cheers guys, I don't know much about diffs except they make your wheels spin haha.

u can use the housing and run a 28 spline lsd centre etc...(axles as well) as the stocko 6 is 25 spline.

or source a vl turbo full rear
    disks included.

I'm guessing sourcing the vlt diff with discs would be the more expensive choice? I heard they're getting more expensive to buy

28 spline axles on ebay r $800 so fk that unless u get some from a wreck

What would be the cheapest option for a decent LSD? Cos everyone seems to be talking 28 spline on the net. I personally wouldn't have a fkn clue haha

well its a vn diff man soo they r 30 mm wider on both sides so tyre size is limited. but some have done it and love it and have fitted some good tyres on.

any lsd centre from vn up to vt series 2 (when LS1 came out) will fit your vl housing. but they are all 28 spline. find a centre in good nick and get some 28 spline axles.

vl 6 n/a centres were 25 spline but turbo and V8 were 28 spline so some turbo/V8 axles will be needed if u get the bits seperately

Do you know if the axles are expensive at all? So basically, I can get the internals from VN to VT, but as for the axles, they have to be from either a vlt or v8, or I can get the whole setup if I can find it.

Also, are VL NA 6 diffs Borgwarner? If so, can I just find another borgwarner diff from [insert car here] and use the internals if they are 28 spline?

    dunno. yes and yes.

vl n/a 6 is the same borg warner diff just with a different spline count and a 2 pinion centre whereas V8/turbo was 4 pinion

My mechanic quoted me just over $2,000 to get an LSD built that's good for 200hp, is that a decent price? Not sure If that includes fitting it all up though, he also mentioned that he has to check to make sure my axels are the same spline or it's another $800 for new axels, so I guess the $2,000 is just for the "middle" section of the diff

Dude 2000 is ridiculous for a diff. Just find a second hand one on eBay and swap them over. Will be fine
For what your doing with it

He told me "New bearings, seals, second hand LSD centre, oil and labour. More if we have to get axles and if you want to change gear ratios."

So that's basically all the parts, out with the old, and in with a diff that's got [mostly] new parts & is pretty unbreakable.

I'd do it a cheaper way but I want to do it right & I'm willing to pay a bit more to get newer parts than a bunch of 2nd hand, though I guess I could ring a few different diff shops and compare prices.

ring around and get more quotes for sure, i got a kaaz centre installed for 2k, but that was without bearings, seals, ratio changes etc. and they are worth a hell of a lot more than a standard lsd centre

I guess maybe since I'm sort of going through my mate at his shop, rather than going directly to a diff shop, unless he's telling me that's what the shop's price is, cos' he usually tends to send people to specific shops, e.g. exhaust shops if they want an exhaust, rather than doing it at his shop & being the middle man which costs more.

Anyone know of any good/reliable diff places Northside of Brisbane? I've never really taken notice before & never looked.

source a vl turbo one and b done with it man. thats crazy for a N/A with no power.

heck im using a N/A single pegger 25spline with 10psi boost through it.. (not through it, u know what i mean) all is well.

22months like it and still fine.

Are VLT diffs hard to come by? Are they expensive?

ford lsd 25 spline | eBay

Just chuck that in your housing, it wont go for any more than $250 & theres only about $100 to $150 labour at a shop to fit

I just got a LSD rebuilt and installed in my car for $1000 all up. If you source a LSD fist then get it rebuilt/reconditioned it will be way cheaper.
VT V6 fitted with DMS gold 40mm coilovers, Whiteline adjustable swaybars & strut brace, 330mm AP racing brakes, Rebuilt 3.45:1 LSD and a Powerdyne supercharger

Did you have to get different axles or just keep yours?

Well being a VT I just bought a LSD that came from a VT, so it was a straight swap.

benefits are can loop it better doing a skid lol

down side is you gotta replace to tyres not just the one

but apart from that VL's are better getting a diff change from drum to disc anyway so my point of veiw just put a vl turbo disc lsd in it if you wanna do the swap
