i wouldnt advise it, its there for a reason and its not even really that closely wound together.

I havnt done this but does taking your air filter out give you any increase in power or does the air flow through it quickly enough

you're right, you probably wouldnt notice it, but why is it a stupid idea? the mesh as we all know is there to seve a function, to ensure the air 'straightens up' in effect, to give a more accurate reading acroos the afm and it also prevents larger objects from reaching the engine should a filter failure occur. but if you look after your car and check the filter regularly and you are porting and polishing the innards of your throttle body and inlet manifold etc, is it such a stupid idea?

Somewhere in these threads they were discussing the restriction that the afm mesh has and is higher than some other things. Take for instance a fly screen door, once open lets a hell of a lot more air through, than what it would if it was closed. I do believe they're there for a reason but what reason? I left the front one in basically to protect the air flow meter, but i couldn't see y i should keep the back, so i removed it.

I wouldn't recommend ever not having a filter panel or pod either. Just make sure you have a high flow one.

They are there because they are meant to protect the AFM filiment from large objects, like if somehow a stone got past the filter ( I know, the chances of it happening are almost zero )

There are things you can do before you go messing around with that.

My hi flow panel filter has wire mesh on it so I took both mine out, It does make a sort of a howling noise when the revs pick up in 2nd ( I like it hehe), and yes the AFM meshs are the most restrictive items on the whole intake system if your fitting a hi flow filter and leave them in you will not gain any more air flow than a standard filter can deliver.
