I think i got the solution for you....

I know that the ford XFs had a very similar problem, turns out it was the solenoid on the starter motor. Now and then it will happen - maybe even when cold, but when hot, it is more prone to happening. It's no guarantee to be the solution in this case, but a possibility.

You could try this.... next time it's having trouble starting just tap the solenoid (or the whole starter), should free it up a bit.

do you mean it struggles to turn over or struggles to fire?

if its the first itll be the starter motor. 3 main possibilities - stuffed brushes, stuffed solenoid or old wiring in the VL which requires a few wires and a new relay.

If its the second issue id be checking the afm and the coil. dizzy should be ok.

have a look at your crank angle sensor plug, my car was doing that and also was misfiring hard at a certain rev in each gear.

poor start up and misfire was due to dizzy cap n rotor, got them replaced, improved by about 30% then got CAS plug replaced worked perfectly now.

According to my trusty EFI Fault Diagnosis book, it lists :

Engine Hard To Start When Warm :

    Fuel Supply
    Air Regulator
    Limp Home Mode Set
    ECU

Have you had a look at the ECU and pulled any codes off it? There are a red and green LED on the side of the ECU. The red LED represents ten units and the green LED represents single units. EG : If you get 3 red flashes and 2 green flashes, that indicates Code 32.

    How to extract codes :

    1. Remove the left hand kick panel and carefully turn the mode selector on the ECU fully anti-clockwise.

    2. Turn the ignition on and ensure that both LED's are lit.

    3. If the LED's are not lit, check the continuity of the ECU power amd earth circuits. If the power supply and earth are satisfactory, renew the ECU.

    4. Carefully turn the selector fully clockwise.

    5. Start the engine and allow it to idle. If the engine cannot be started, operate the starter for at least 2 seconds to cancel Code 32 and proceed to step 9.

    6. If the engine will start, Codes 14, 23, 24 and 31 (non air conditioned) should be displayed along aith any other codes currently in memory.

    7. Drive the vehicle at a speed greater than 10 km/h to cancel Code 14.

    8. Stop the engine and turn the ignition switch to the ON position.

    9. Depress and release the throttle pedal to cancel Code 23.

    10. Move the gear selector to any gear and back to neutral to cancel Code 24.

    11. On vehicles with air conditioning, turn the air conditioning switch on and off to cancel Code 31.

    12. If any codes other than 31 (non air conditioned) or 44 (air conditioned) are displayed, check the components affecting the operation of the circuit indicated under that code number.

    CODES :

    11 Crank Angle Sensor Circuit
    12 Air Mass Sensor Circuit
    13 Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit
    14 Vehicle Speed Sensor Circuit
    21 Ignition Signal
    23 Throttle Position Sensor Circuit
    24 Neutral Switch
31 System Pass (non air conditioned vehicles) or Air Conditioner Circuit (air conditioned vehicles)
    32 Starter Signal Circuit
34 Detonation Sensor Circuit (turbo models)
44 System Pass (air conditioned vehicles)

    Clearing Codes :

    1. With the ignition on, turn the mode selector on the ECU fully clockwise for at least 2 seconds.

    2. Turn the mode selector anti-clockwise for at least 2 seconds.

    3. Turn the igniton off.
The very existance of flamethrowers proves that sometime, somewhere, someone said to themselves, 'You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to do it.
