    Default Re-attaching side trim thingy

I've searched around and haven't really got a clear idea of how to re-attach the side moulds etc once taken off.

These are what I'm on about [Not mine, just a pic from google]:

I want to take them off to repaint, and re install since the previous owner has used some sort of shitty double sided foamy tape shit that is coming apart and falling off and water gets behind them because of it, it looks horrendous. I plan on repainting them silver, probably not the exact silver colour, but a similar silver from supercheap or bunnings (I'm a fan of rustoleum but it isn't made for plastic I don't think).

I read that the moulds clip on somehow, but people tend to use some form of doublesided tape, but I want them to sit flush against the side of the car, something which the tape makes impossible, or really hard to do.

Flush like this, if you can see that well:

    Cheers guys!

could you just use sikaflex? It held my vs side strips on amazingly well for 15 or so years

Cheers guys, I'll have to pick some up on the weekend!

One other thing, do they just like "pull" off or do you need to be careful in taking them off, i.e. clips or screws etc?

nah man, use the "Cheese Cutter method" with some fishing line and slowly cut it away,. no screws or clips.

slide the line under your trims and pull side to side to cut the tape...... winner winner chicken dinner :P

Holden used both double sided tape and silicone. The tape held them on while the silicone was setting. You should see "Tape" and arrows scratched into the surface showing where it goes. Make sure you clean all the old tape off, and all of the old silicone out of the channels. There are a couple of plastic pins that protrude through the door but they're only for locating.

They are near on impossible to get off without damaging your doors and guards, or the trims themselves. A serrated bread knife also works wonders but will make a real mess of your paint of you slip.

If I damage under the strips that's ok since you can't see it anyway, but the less damage the better. Would there be damage with the fishing wire method?

Ah okay, my dad's an avid fisherman so he's bound to have the good stuff :P

Also it's good to know I just need fishing wire to debadge too, I want to do that at the same time & either leave them off or paint them again [silver, then black on top, then lightly sand the badges so the silver shows up on the lion, holden writing etc]

yeah man well if ur dad is a nuts fisherman he would have some braid so use that as its abrasive and strong. then use some prep-sol(wax/grease remover) to clean up the double-sided tape residue.

I just took mine off not long ago its pretty simple I used the fishing line method, and remember as it goes into the front guard the qtr panel one does have a screw in for locating. For repainting, I'd suggest using genuine colour paint, its not hard to get, just get the MX Grey (exec, I'm sure one of you boys here have it) or if you want silver the Asteroid Grey (calais) paint code (which I have somewhere if you want it?) It will look 10x better in the factory colours bunnings job may look cheap or tacky and go into a paint place and they will mix you up a pressure pack. I usually use two sided tape to install my molds, but buy some good stuff, 3M make some good shit and it wont come off like the cheap ones but will be easier to remove then sikaflex if you want to later on.

Ah true, cheers! How do you go about getting around the screw with the fishing wire? Can you just pull the trim out a bit till' the screw thing pops out, then pass it with the wire and put it back and keep going?

I wonder if yours snapped off previously, Nath? Hopefully this weekend I can attack her and at least remove both sides and clean them up, I don't care about driving around without them for a bit, might as well do it once & do it right!

After the double sided tape was stuck onto the mould , they were were put in a rack ( a couple of dozen at a time ) with a heater so the glue was softened slightly before fitting so they stick better.
