    Default replace the engine?

hi everyone, i have a 1987 vl, and i found out today that the main bearings are going, theres bits of metal in the oil. also the lifters are makin a strange noise and the bearings are going on the water pump. would it be cheaper to get a second hand engine and replace the old one, or to fix these problems? is there any other options? any help would b appreciated.

if you got an engine rebuild kit could you do it yourself? they are about $1000. if you buy a second hand engine you'll probably have to rebuild it anyway cos it could be screwed too. you could save up and buy a crate motor?!

i'm lucky to even have a car, jus a poor lil uni student working at maccas lol. the car onli cost me $2000 so i dont plan on spending too much on an engine. if i came across a second hand engine in decent condition and low kms, would it b worth the hassle? or will these problems happen again soon on a second hand engine anyways?

some people sell the engines cos they're upgrading and you can hear the engine running before you buy it. the bottom ends are near bullet proof so you are really unlucky to have one go. if you buy 2nd hand i highly doubt you'll have another one go like yours did. if you come across one with no more than 250000 to 300000 km you should be right. you're likely to have more trouble with the top end then the bottom. before you buy one check the dipstick, even with no oil in it there will be white crap on the bottom of it if the heads blown. it could still be blown in different spots but hard to tell if not in car running.

I would get on the phone, and source another motor from the wreckers......most of them are pretty good, and then ask around your mates....(where abouts are u??maybe a few JC members could help you out on the transplant...)...........and see if any of ure mates can help with things.....like a block & tackle , ramps, toools, etc etc.......

im in sydney now, but originally from murrurundi, near tamworth. dads a mechanic and would able to help me with the transplant. i know a guy up that way that has a vl with a running engine that he plans to put into a kingswood.. im waiting for him to get bac to me whether he wants to keep the engine or not, i was gunna take the rest off his hands but now i need the motor. then again if that idea fails, wat sort of price would i be lookin at for an engine? and so the bearings going is a rare problem then? the car still drives and i can prolly get it to my dads place safely.

I would drive it to Dads, and thats it...........any sort of money from $200 up , I guess....for another motor........ ring around the place a bit.........and metal in the oil will kill the motor prety quick......bearings going means the rest of the motor is pretty tired........

thnx, ill have to take it bac there and leave it until i find another engine or untill i find someone who wants a car with an engine that needs repairing. most of the money will be coming from dad, so whether he will b bothered with it is up to him. $200 or so for an engine doesnt sound too bad. and mine has around 330000kms on it too by the way. thnx for ur help guys.

It sounds like your old motor isn't worth repairing..if the bearings are gone, the pistons/rings/valves/bushes....everything is worn.....also, the wreckers will probably do you an exchange....makes it a lot cheaper.......you keep all the bits off the outside of it....called a short motor........just the block with no alt , fuel pump, oil pump etc etc.......

i made some phonecalls today an th first place i called, a wreckers called commwreck, had a few vl engines there. they want $250 for the whole engine minus the distributer. mines fine anyway so thats ok. and it will also solve my water pump and lifter problems as it comes with everything else by the sound of it. i completely forgot to ask bout a trade in, ill have to ask tomoro when i call them bac after ive talked with my dad. then i just have to get the engine and my car 4 hours north for the transplant...
