VL radiator mouth soft metal easily deformed

finally solved a 2 year search for a mysterious water leak
the radiator mouth, the part the radiator cap screws into on my VL is of soft metal, easily deformed. gradually it became out of shape, allowing the water to be pushed out the overflow pipe by pressure
I only had to tap it back into shape, the mechanic pressure tested it as OK too, he didnt notice the fault

have never heard of soft metal here before, but care is needed when removing radiator cap
