    Exclamation Idle issue

    hey all,
I originally thoght this problem was an issue with the spark plugs, but i have since changed them and it is still there..
okay, so when i pull up at a set of lights and let it idle i can feel sort of a miss-idle, and i can feel the vibrations through the car like the engine itself is jerking around (but not hard, you can just feel it.)
And it is not timed it can stop for 5 secends then start and keep on doing it every 3 secends..

Also it seems too stop when i put the car in nuteral..

let me know what it could be, cheers! (:

the correct way to set idle speed is shown in the workshop manuals and is complicated, you could try to find a VL workshop manual at a local library and photo copy details

clean ur AAC (Auxiliary Air Control)valve mate. its probably gummed up.. as well as u throttlebody. u can cheat and use carby cleaner...

but i would part the plenum and flush it out with degreaser.. if u part ur plenum u will need a new gasket from plenum to intake runners

    whats ur idle RPM?

should be around 750rpm u can bring it up slightly by adjusting the screw on the back of the plenum facing firewall.

Dont adjust the throttle plate resting point.

The problem still exists and it has gotten A LOT worse,
its to the point were i cannot drive the car for more then 10minutes, it starts of fine then gets terrible.
i have gotten a new dizzy and distributer cap. and it still happens.

i did further inspection last night and i noticed the the spark plug number 5 clicks and you can see a spark jump out, i have checked the plug itself and it doesn't seem cracked. i tried to wrap the lead up with electrical tape to be a temp fix but that didnt work.
If i dont fix the problem with a new set of leads i dont know whats next.

let me know what i should do, cheers.

there is yes but should be ok.. make sure the pin is moving freely. u can go further when u remove the plenum to pull off the rear housing and clean in there properly. as a lot of blow by ends up in this area

a new set of leads will get it running on 6 cylinders again, does it blow out black smoke ? like its overfueling ? possibly coolant temp sensor, or cas but youve said you replaced that. also have you done a basic service on it ? fuel filter, air filter, etc.

i havnt cleaned up there yet, all i have done with the air intake is checked the filter and its fair too say i need a new one.
tbh i dont know were to start cleaning it out, is there anything i can muck up in trying?
and do i just get in there by undoing the bolys near the manifold?

Im still waiting for the leads in the mail..

Is this the aac valve i should be cleaning out?

If so i took it out and gave it a quick scrape with a brush.

so the issue is still there but i notice it is only once it gets hot. i drive it for about 15minutes going about 40 to 80 ks. and it starts to do it.
also it seems to do it a lot worse once i back down the revs. and it seems the only thing that stops it comking out up a hill is to hit the power button..
    any suggestions?

For cleaning in the above post when you have it off, blast inside where it came from with some carby cleaner also incase it's gummed up inside

Air regulator? should only affect it when it's cold though, if the test in the pic below has an effect when it's hot then it's stuck open.

I had a prob when I first got mine off my brother. Virtually running on 4 cyl's. That transistor near the distributor! I had the earth wire just sitting there and one of the crank angle sensor wires to it was barely hanging. had to repair the connector and then went fine, until oneday my car died when low on fuel. Eventually found that it was a weak earth going to the pump and was running after that fine, although I know the pump's on its way out as it's making the idle rev's variate! Mightn't be this either, but replace fuel filter if it's old. Also, check the contacts on the AFM wires. I know these things will play up bad and even stop the car if the connection isn't good.

    Cheers!
    Jim.

    g'day guys.
still no progress with this issue.
afm didnt work and i have cleaned out and checked nearly all leads and plugs.
it does seem a little better though.
And i have noticed a sort of thud/rattle that SOUNDS like its coming from the timing belt area at the front of the bay.
could this be a timing belt issue? and are they known too be fine when cold but stuffed up when hot? cheers.
