I got this white auto vl the other day because . . . . No idea why I did but I'm glad i did.
So far she has been lowered with caster camber kits, front brake upgrade including master, race brakes n changed most of the brake lines to stainless (a perk of working in a brake shop).
The Gbox has been having issues chosing gears and the speedo doesnt work. Could this be related to the speed sensor or the magnetic pickups in the speedo?
speedo is cable driven, the sensor on the speedo unit in the dash only really tells it to lock up the tcc at speed (fake 5th i've heard it referred as) and 4th, they're not an electronic trans
how exactly is it having trouble choosing gears? slipping, dropping back when lightly accelerating? not changing at all? staying in a higher gear when you floor it without kicking down? a bit more detail pls, guessing you mean an auto trans not a manual gbox?

my speedo stoped working one day, hit a pretty nasty bump and it kicked in again, so check to see if its got loose wireing behind the dash cluster.
what are racing brakes?
as stated above, vl's are a cable driven speedo, no electronics all mechanical, the only electronics on them send a pulse for the ecu and/or trans comp/cruise control if fitted, lose wiring will not stop it from working
pull the cluster out and move the car back n forwards to see if the inside cable is moving, if it moves it could be a faulty speedo unit or the cable wasn't pushed onto the cluster properly, they can be a bitch to clip on properly sometimes
on the back of the cluster you'll see a small brass fitting inside a cast aluminium bit sticking out, give it a quick spin with your finger n look to see if the needle moves
if the cable wasn't moving when you moved the car get under it and make sure it's connected properly to the trans, whilke you're at it get another person to watch in the car as you turn the bottom part of the cable to rule out a broken cable.
can be an idea to spray some lube into the cable when you have the cluster out also, if the speedo works and jumps around it's usually caused by the cable binding from lack of lubrication
when refitting the cluster don't do the 4 screws up to tight, the plastic has a tendancy to crack at the mounting points.

sorry jxw missed that
The clip retaining the cog on the trans output shaft may have come adrift, not sure what it's like on the VL boxes, but all the Trimatics i've pulled apart have had this issue.
