    Smile Vl Project

    Hi all.
Newbie here this is my first visit and first post to this site. Have just aquired a VL berlina auto with a non tubro RB30, and I will be making it my project car converting it to a V8 manual, and there in lies my first question. Apart from a K frame, what else will I need for the conversion, and then engine mods ( chasing 300kilowats at the treads )?

I should be picking the car up this week and then its straight into the shed ready for when I can find time (yea right) to start stripping it down for a sand and repaint. I'll be shore to take some initial photos before the long slow process begins.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to continually updating you fine folk.

Injected v8 out of a later model car or a carby 308?
Your going to need cubes and alot of cash to pull that power.

You could go an ls1 with heads cam and tune and pull 300 then

Was looking at the injected v8 option, and would probably stroke and supercharge it. But maby the ls1 would be a better option.

From experience on these forums, the LS1 seems to be the way to go, though I can't remember if it's the LS1 or not that's meant to be really expensive to put in?

the 304 injected v8 conversion can be done for under $2000 including engine, loom, headers etc.i done my conversion for $2200 or $2300 and that was manual aswell.

i havent done the ls1 thing yet but i will.its expensive thoe but well worth it.

    any thoughts on rb30et?

Thanks detox_nath83 for the forum tip I will post there later when I have a photo to upload.

Ok...............after much convincing from some friends of mine in the know I have re-adjusted my power output to a more reasonable 200+k/w, and being in a vl it will still be more than enough ( for now anyway lol). What I will be searching for is a VN-VR 5lt manual as my donor car, so hopefully I can find a cheap one locally, in the not to distant future.

On a positive note I picked the car up this arvo so will be taking some photos later to show what I have to work with and see how far I have to go. Oh well have to start somwhere I guess.

200 rwkw is still going to be hard to push from a standard stroke.unless you charge it or throw some compression in it with a decent manifold etc

You couldn't put a carby 308 in it as it would be older than what the car originally came out with.

You could however, fit a carby 304, as that is what they were from factory.

Hay guys thanks for all the info.

Nasty1- what makes the ls1 conversion so expensive? is it the engine and componentry or the engineering side of it. As ive been told I would have to get it engineering certified. I have also been thinking of stroking it out to 5.6lt (I think or is it 5.7, not shore) and would also like to put a supercharger on it at some stage.

Hi Uwishn- Why do you whish you went the ls1, what do you have in it at the moment? Nice walky replica by the way mate

nasty1- I had thought about the RB30, and putting a turbo on it, but just really love the note of a solid v8, and I ashume the cost to get the power output from the Rb30 would be about the same once I strengthend internals and purchased a turbo kit.

ls1 is a 5.7 plenty of power for a vl, whilst you pay the loan off for the conversion lol.

i built a 5lt for mine and really wish i waited to put an ls in it which i will one day,
it would cost about 5k more than fitting a 5lt,there is one going on eBay just needs paint and trim and a few bits for $8k that would be a sick buy(though nasty1 would know a fairly accurate build cost on an ls conversion)

uwishn- what kind of power are you getting from your worked 5lt? Do you know if you would have to have it engineered by putting in a ls1?

Vl turbo will pull more power stock or modified then a 304 with work.

My rb30 is running 18psi small cam with a 35/40 microtech and injectors pulls 320rwkw

So what your saying is that if I kept the Rb30 and turbo it ( abviously adding extras aswell) that I will be able to get the original 300+ rwkw's that I was looking for. I guess that could convince me to keep it even, will have to rethink that one. Finally took a picture of it tonight and will post it in a thread in the area that detox_nath83 told me about.

    Nice mate.
    yeah, stick with the RB30.
Best things for RB30s, Cam, exhaust, timing advanced, inlet and tune, then turbo is also another good addition.
Also, converting the na motor to turbo, would be better (In my opinion) than getting an already turboed rb30.
When you turbo it, dont decompress the engine. Leave it at the same compression, just chuck the turbo conversion on. RB30, loves it, and it will last.
I know a guy who ran 18psi through a stock NA rb30 motor and blew up the turbo because it was a cheap Chinese turbo.

If you need more help, look on the R31 skyline club, as they use the same motors.

These mods listed actually seem fairly easy to do, and I am considering doing them as well.
The twin cam head gives a decent chunk of more power and itll still be NA!
need more help, and look through the skyline club wiki. Its actually really helpful.
Hopefully this helps you out a bit.
