I urgently need help. My younger brother was driving my car when it appeared to lose power then stopped dead. He thought it ran out of petrol but there is petrol in it. We can't start the car. As i am on a pension i am only 23yrs i need my car so we have to try and fix it. Any one with any ideas. We were told it could be a starter motor, alternator but we don't know. Any tips would be great.
Crank angle sensor if cranking no start has fuel an charge and spark its def that
mum said is there any other things we could try to see whats wrong
yea more info
yea more info.
if it's turning over then it's not the starter motor.
it is more than likley crank angle sensor! or fuel pump/s or air flow metre. these are the most common things to shut a vl down whilst driving.
take the dizzy cap off, rotor arm out, steel plate out, look to see lots of reddish dust = nackered cas.
Nobody wants to play with me
the kids said that the car would not start last night when they tried it. Essie said she thought that she heard the fuel pump work when she first switched it on but the motor would not kick over. the lights etc. still came on. We haven't been back to have another go as it has been fairly hot so we thought we would wait until it cools down a bit. Do you think thats a better idea to try then. Sorry that we sound dumb but we are only basic back yard mechanics. In other words we only know a bit about cars. But if we get enough info we know where to start. Thanks everyone and keep coming up with ideas for us. Essie's mum.
I was driving from home a while ago and my car just died, lost all power. I waited a lil' bit and she started up fine, so I kept driving her. Again, the next day on the way to work, same thing happened so I asked around on here and it ended up being the Crank Angle Sensor. Replaced that (bought a new one, with bearing included, for $70 off eBay) and my car runs fine ever since.

you said motor would not kick?as in it wouldnt turno over or it was turning over and not firing?
no it just wouldn't start
We just attempted to start the car and the motor was attempting to start but it won't go. It's like when you run out of petrol and you just keep trying to start the motor but it won't work until you put petrol in it and then it starts/ (hope this makes sense of what i'm trying to say.) you can tell i am a novice.
Definatley check the fuel filters, and check to see if it's getting a spark by holding one of the spark plug leads against the top of the engine and turning the key

sounds like it may be the fuel filters/pump. Can you let us know how to get them out and replace the fuel filter and pump. We will be buying the fuel filter monday so hopefully will have the car going by late pm. A friend said they would help us if we get the filter and pump. Thanks to everyone with their ideas. We are going to try this first and hope thats what it is. From the novice one.
From memory, I think the VL has 2 fuel filters, one up front somewhere, and one under the rear somewhere, next to the fuel tank I think the rear one is? My old Ford Ute I used to have had one filteri n the engine bay and one just infront of the rear wheel, but then again it was a ford so probably different.
As for the pump, when my pump died the car started, stalled a few seconds later, then refused to start. Would just turn over, but never start. I also could not hear the BZZZZZZZZZZ / Whirrrrrrrrrr noise that the fuel pump makes when you turn the car to "on".
As for replacing the pump & filters, I had a mechanic do mine (Ripped me off the b-stard) but he replaced the fuel pump and both filters, he told me never replace the pump, if it's broken, without replacing the filters at the same time, just to be safe. Filters are cheap as anyway, Supercheap sells them.

no filter up front
ok thanks. so the filter is at the back near the tank. We should be able to do it. What's the best option to jack the car up and remove the wheel to get to it or just climb under the car. We can't put it onto car ramps as the car won't start. We just need step by step instructions so we know what we are doing and won't stuff it up. We spoke to a bloke in shepparton who also said do the filter and fuel pump, thanks again. We do have a man doing it, thought i better tell you that. LOL, Thanks again.
You need to buy a gregorys vl manual
Step 1: Buy a Gregorys VL Manual, $40 from Supercheap Auto. Trust me.
Step 2: Place your jack under the car, in front of the rear wheel on the side the filter is at. I dunno which side since I've never needed to know.
Step 3: LOOSEN YOUR WHEEL A BIT. Otherwise you won't be able to undo the studs.
Step 4: Raise the car until the rear wheel is off the ground about 5cm.
Step 6: Place a Jack Stand under the car and lower the jack so that the car rests on the stand. Make sure you jack it up in the right spot, or you can risk damaging the underside of the car. You can now safely work under the car without risking getting crushed. Now you can take the wheel fully off.
Step 7: Not sure, since I have never replaced my pump personally, or the filters. If you want to replace the filter, I guess just get your new filter, swap it with the old one making sure the arrows are facing the right way if it has them, and that's about it. As for the pump, again, no idea.

how much fuel does it have in it? i've been stuck before thinking a vl was out of fuel, could hear the pump, but it was the internal lp pump that shat itself and the high pressure pump simply didn't have enough grunt to suck the fuel through the dead pump...
does it have a tacho? if so does it show a steady rpm when cranking? (not random/erratic pulses)
It's not something as simple as the bolt holding the rotor button in place has fallen out? snapped rotor button?
if not as above, try a new cas etc
CAS for sure..
test pumps by pulling of the TOP fuel line in the engine bay. placing this hose in a bottle and turn ignition on. if bottle gets fuel for about 3 seconds. its the prime stage ready for start. this will rule out pumps.(mine looks a lil dif but this hose)

there is a small filter bag on the inertia pump in-tank.this will clog up if u run ur L low on fuel.. then another under the car in-front drivers side axle.
