    Default My new VL

i have been driving hondas for a few years now and i love them but i am finaly moving out and finishing my diploma and as much as i like my preludes, their expencive. when they break their costly and my curent one is still on loan. i didnt wanna be paying a loan just for a flashy car u know. so i have finaly found a VL. its curetly my runaround but when my honda goes (its for sale) it will become my daily driver and then my project car.
now i would like to say i am in no way disliking driving my VL and i dont see it as a steamer or crap runaround. i love it already and think im gonna have fun with it.
    its a nov 87 Gold NA RB30VL
i searched for a while and found this one in wollunga of all places, it was for $1600 and i managed to talk it over time to $1300 and was well pleased with my buy.
its mechanicaly good especialy the new engin and its been owned by an old man *gotta love it* and although its not thrashed unfortunatly they dont know how to keep them undercover and polish u know. the top half. ei the boot roof and bonet are faded. but he did know a bit cos he knew about the low radiator problem and atleast he knows not to let them get anywhere neer overheating.
shes stock as a rock down to the old man seatcovers. which came strate off. my plans for it are to paint the boot bonnet and roof again through a spraying mate, and the bumpers silver.
the interior will be vynal died a very light grey ans the usual lowering swaybars struts mags and sound system.

i ahve one problem with overdrive. unles im going 110ish and if even at speed im underload it shudders. ive been told that a "tranny service" will fix this is this so? or will my gearbox slowly die? whats causing this? other gears change realy smothly no clunk atall going from gears to park or reverse in any order so im guessing its a isolated problem??

    thanx in advance

    pics commign soon

Hey, sounds like an alright buy... i had the same problem with the gearbox some time ago and all it needed was an oil change... try that before you pay for the auto service...

i agree that changing the trans fluid is the first thing to do for any auto trans problem as the additives in the fluid eventually wear out
but how the heck do you get the trans sump off the VL 6cyl ? theres no drainplug and the rear crossmember with rear mounting for the powerunit badly blocks the 2 rear screws, anyone done this job?
max elleries workshop for the VL, which generally isnt bad, says no auto trans fluid changes are needed, which I think is quite wrong.

I think you mean "willunga" lol & When I bought mine I had to spend fair bit of time with mr turtle wax & ms cloth to get it back to Red. So I understand the paint fadage issues.

As for trans, mine was like that also when I got it. Trans fluid works a treat peoples!!! lmao.

As for the radiator, please also make sure you bleed the system for air, not just low lying radiator but head closeness to bonnet = poor air circulation, & air bubbles heat up the coolin system & are what usually does the damage

Debadging was the first thing I did along with above mentioned things, also fix dash lights & headlights as they were dodge also.

    Have fun!!

yeah deabding made allot of diference. i will get my machanic to do the oil change cos i have no ideah how to get the oil out. hondas just have the plug.
i just used soapy water and then tcut it . but ive heard eucaliptus oil is good for that.. and yeah fishing line undert then corner using a sawing motion but pulling away from the car so not to scratch it.

VL's are easy to do, it is just the sump plug you need to undo, and the filter is fairly easy to reach also.

Actually I couldnt find fishin line right then on the moment I decided I was doin it lol, So I used a flat knife wrapped in a cloth soaked in prepsol. & then after I prepsoled all the crappy sticky stuff (stikaflex?) off & then gave it a polish & ta-da!!! lol I wish I did use fishin line after all thou, cus then maybe badges would have been in 1 piece (someone asked for them after ) oh well at the time didnt bother me that the bigger ones broke in half.
