auto trans starts in second gear,no upshift to fourth

just bought a vl,the car is in good nick,engine sounds good although the car takes off so slow,i thought it may just be low in fluid but it was over filled so I drained some fluid until it was at the right level.still the same just selects two gears 2nd and third????anybody know what the heck is goin on in there.

ya now the button has to be in for it to select 4th and it wont go into 4th till the tranny is warm and at a certain speed, i think around 65-70 so. Button out is power mode button in is economy with 4th. as for starting in 2nd do you mean the car takes off in second or you turn the key and it starts in 2nd gear?

many auto trans problems are caused by overfilling with fluid
the fluid level should be checked when warm as it expands quite a lot from cold
