it says in my vl repair manual that certain friction, insulating, sealing and other products such as brake linings brake bands, clutch linings, torque conveters, gaskets.may contain asbestos. Is this bad? Thanks

Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!

Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!
I dont think theres any in the car, beware of brake and clutch dust which may have asbestos dust in it
especially dangerous was the blowing out of brake dust with compressed air
I don't think anyone would be running around on asbestos pads anymore - Well I certainly hope not.
In its whole form its rather safe, its just when you get the dust you should start to worry.
it takes a lot of asbestos to be breathed in before it's bad, there is a certain mersurement, something parts permillion, just changing yoru brake pads wont give you black lung, need to be working with it a fair bit.
scary fact for ya, i spend heaps of time around qld schools, did ya know that a majority of schools have absestos in the buildings, in the awnings mainly, and some tiled roofs still have it
most tafe establishments have got absestos lagging around pipe work still
so i wouldnt worry, remember this, absestos is fine, providing you dont create a dust then it's all good,
but no brake shoes have got it in them anymore, been on the out now for the last 10 yrs, how ever, some vls will still have them on the rear shoes, but dont worry, if you are concerned, simply remove the wheel, and hose the area down, then it's safe to work on.

Asbestos is still around from time to time, I did a gearbox in a HQ recently and it still had an asbestos clutch in it along with asbestos brake pads.
From the information I have been given it only takes 1 fibre to get into the wrong part of your lungs and your done for.
Just a few tips when working with the stuff
always wash down never blow down with compressed air
wear gloves, mask & safety glasses.
If your not sure better safe than sorry.
You will find alot of old gaskets for exhaust manifolds are still asbestos based as well.
cheers

My VC still is. Doesn't do many km's any more so I haven't replaced the front brake pads in quite a few years. The rear brake shoes will definitely be asbestos, they've been on the car untouched for 10 years since I bought it. I used compressed air once on them when I had trouble refitting a brake drum. Fingers crossed I won't have a lung problem years down the track.Originally Posted by bextor84

well from what i understood yes it does take just 1 parrticle to get into the wrong place to get black lungs or what ever its called! but it takes about 10000000000000000 to break down the barriers around the certin cell that needs to be infected for problems to arise. (we did it for some stupid science project)
but people who did get sick from it were working in roofs pulling down ceilings and things for like weeks on end...
you would struggle to get sick from the break pads even if u were trying to from what i understand! (in no means am i saying go sand down your break pads and inhail to see if you get sick though!!!) lol.
i noticed in my break pads i put in the other week it has "asbestos free" on the packet... it actully worried me and i was going to ask about it!
ooh well... enjoy hope i helpd just a lil
