Hi, just putting new wheel on the VL and wondering why it does not sit straight? With the boss kit i have you can only put the screws in in one position for the wheel to fit on. Are my wheels out of line? its a fair way off being on centre.
Thanks
Make sure that when you start the front wheels are straight. Take off the steering wheel and put on the boss kit. There are two markers you need to line up so that when the wheel flicks back it shuts off the indicator. Then put the wheel on with only 3 bolts instead of all 6. And test how straight it is. I may need adjusting several times but only 1 or 2mm at a time. Thats what I did. Getting its straight first time is a slut.

yeah mate nothing to do with the wheel alignment unless it really really really is screwed.
should be able to move it a groove or 2 at a time on the column spline.
To get the standard steering wheel off you just remove the horn cover and thats where the screws are right?
yeah just take that cover off and loosen but dont fully remove the main bolt. brute force or a steering wheel remover will do it. sometimes they can be a massive pain to get off.

and like the other post says dont ever be tempted to use a hammer. thats not cool for the car!
a hammer is ok, just be gentle. too many worry warts on here.

i used a hammer on mine, never used knew how to pull off a steering wheel... Undid the nut, got my arms around it and yanked it as my mate smacked the coloumn with the hammer. Put the boss kit on but it didn't fit in all the way...don't know if it was already fallen in cuz its common on vls or i smacked it in. But i took it back and got a calais boss kit...it fits in furthor...Put it on with my wheels straight, and just knotched it on one cog thing at a time till straight, but cuz its calais its only a tad out, right indicator works fine, left indicator turns off as soon as u turn the wheel back, not 90 degrees back. Didn't keep the original one cuz my mate had it and it ground up metal inside and the steering locked up while driving. And cuz my shaft was down i could see inside my steering column, didn't look pretty.
glad to see a real life testimonial in my fight to educate people about the perils of using a hammer on commodores!!!!
don't know if the hammer caused it, because the bloke at autobarn said that vls have the common problem of the shaft falling in...but i can't see how it would if the nut is on. So it prob did get knocked in, never thought about it really till last night...guess ill have to smack it back up![]()
if u ever use a hammer use a large punch. take the nut off line up the punch square an give it 1 sharp hit. it should pull off really easy. if it dosnt give it another. never hit the shaft with the hammer itl mushroom it an ul never get the nut back on. and never hit the nut on the shaft itl ruin the thread an u wont get anything on or off.. an yes im speaking (typing) from experience. lol
....its not the mushrooming of the head of the shaft that is the issue mate. its the collapsable steering and the damage you do hitting it with ANYTHING - hammer, punch, mallet whatever. use a puller!Originally Posted by evl
