the ball joint is mounted in the bottom control arm. it sits on a self locking taper which pops out with enough force. if you do have a ball joint remover, then it should be ok, as they are designed for the job. if it still difficult even with the tool, try soaking it with some WD-40 or some penetrene overnight. failing that again, it would pay to take it either to a mechanic or a machine shop who would be able to remove it and even install your new one in no time.

i had this problem when i replaced my springs on the front... at ford on the newer cars it was so easy... smack the crap out of it with a hammer it loosens up then u can lever the control arm off... tried this method on the VL and failed bought a ball joint seperator from supercheap and broke it!!

so i took it to a tyre shop... $60 they did it all

well i bought 2 ball joint spliters, the first looked like a claw with a nut that you tighten up and turned out it was too small and only fits on the tie rod end i think its called(end of steering rack arms)

the other looks like a crowbar with a fork at the end, 2 prongs the jam in there but they dont actually knock the ball joint OUT of the thing holdin it in. the car isnt registered and i cant put it back together to take it to a mechanic so thats not really an option atm...theres gotta be someway to do it.

i will try soaking it tomorrow thanx

yeah, the fork is the right tool to use. the first one is your tie rod end remover. you need to be able to hold that control arm tight in a vice or a bench clamp of some description. its onlt pressed steel so be careful not to squeeze it too much or you will crush the bugger
