Default Fitting Tacho dash to exec.

Ok I have been given as a gift a VL calais tacho dash and dash loom. I was wondering how much work it is to install this and will it be a straight "plug in" or am I gonna have to fiddle with senders etc. My car came out with the clock dash with fuel and temp gauges. Am I better off paying an auto elec to do it?

Nevermind All done Its tacho-tastic LOL, Took me around an hour and it would have been quicker if I had smaller hands to unplug and replug in the loom, I just have to get a variable oil pressure sender and its all done. I am unsure of the volt meter tho.

does it just plug in??? i thought u wouldve had to install a wire to the coil to get the tacho going. Haven't seen behind either of them so i can't say nething really.

Just plugs straight in and all works except for the oil pressure gauge which reads full pressure or not until I get the variable oil pressure sender and do that mod. I used the loom that came with the dash I think its a berlina or calais one dunno which, but it has extra wires in the plugs and a whole extra plug (power ariel??). It was very easy to do.

I went back to the wreckers where I got it from and found the car and it was a manual (might have something to do with the speedo not having the plug for kickdown) I just thought it was interesting that auto and manual speedos are different.

i didnt even realise they didnt come with the tachos on some models, i thought it was a standard dash with my Royale, but another question tho... i got a small after market tach with a shiftlight and so forth mouthed on the steering column so its kinda right in front of the normal tach which looks quite good if i do say so myself.. but where is a good place to hook in the two wires for the reading? ive jammed them into where the to wires enter the electronic coil which works but seems to give a slightly different reading than the factory tach... upto 1000rpm in the higher revvs..

The factory dash's tach's are rarely correct, thats why people fit aftermarket ones for an accurate reading. As long as the tacho is suited to your engine size ( 4,6 or 8) then it should be accurate.

sweet, i set it for 6 cylinder which is fine and also means me engines getting cranking to like past 6000 which is good, normally they top out at like 5000 according to the book then you dont gain any more power! cheers ucwepn

mind you ive done the nessessary things to allow it to do that ie; K&N w/ direct air intake as well as the headers/extractors and exhaust, and set the computer up for it all so hopefully thats the case. gotta say im well happy with how its going after doing all that, the 'ol VL's goin like a cut cat, specially on colder nights! usually surprises a few jappas eh!

I think it will just plug in and work, I got the other loom with the dash and it was only 2 plugs to change the dash looms, I did the change of loom just to make sure it worked but in retrospect I think it would still have worked

i had the option to get one at christmas but i thought hey...i won't be able to see the clock or tacho properly due to my tiny sports wheel plus i didn't want to change the odometer from an original 135XXX kms to 205XXX kms.

It is fairly easy to rebuild the cluster with your original speedo, I have done this out of necesity due to the tacho dash being from a manual and the auto dash's speedo's have a circuit to tell the auto what speed the car is doing. otherwise the auto will not kick down gears with a manual speedo installed as there is nowhere for the plug to go. (there is a plug in the back of an auto's speedo).
So I keep my 235,000 k's which is not bad, I have seen vt's with that many and they are at least 10 years newer.

i got it outta a vl that was originally an auto but had a 5 speed conversion done. so will it still kick down gears or present problems?? and does any1 know what it costs to get the oil sender supplied/fitted so the oiul gauge works and if its worth the cash???(can install tha dash meself but oil sender is a bit beyond my abilities lol)

i'd say, it will kickback.. because if that dash was in it when it was auto, then itll have the kickback plug..

you can tell if you look at the back of the cluster there will be a circuitboard visible inside the speedo (you can see it from the top where the plug goes. I still haven't done the sender but the cluster installing part is very easy.

thanks people!! Got me tacho dash in, was alot easier than i thought it would be 2. Though im not sure if tacho is accurate reading, what revs should it be at when it shifts gears?(auto) or does it depend on how hard i hit the pedal?
