It could be a big end, or something minor like a rocker arm bridge snapped. Get a screwdriver (big one) put the handle to your ear and put the screwdriver blade where you think the noise is coming from, and just try and figure out the spot where the noise is coming from by moving the screwdriver from spot to spot. (not very scientific I know) Usually gives you an idea of whats broken.

if its kinda a ticking noise itl be ur lifters vls are bad for this try thicker oil to be on the cheap or replace the lifters that tick its usually only 1 or 2 of them. you car get aftermarket ones for about 30each but i would recomend genuine or nismo items. guido had a guide for changing lifters round here sumwhere hafta look round the old threads maybe under the couch......

i dont think nismo lifters will fit your car if you are talking about the vehicle in your profile.

assuming you are talking about your V8 youll find pushrods may be failing, they are the weak point in those engines and will be one of the first points of damage, from over-revving etc. Actual lifter noise wasnt too much of a problem with the V8s.

V8 rocker covers take only a few mins to remove to have a look under them and see if anything is loose. Check your timing as well, you could have a pre-ingition or 'pinging' issue which can be confused with other problems.

if it is lifters you can stick in an additive, find it at all the usual places, jus bung it in with the oil an will quiet down quick smart. ive got that prob an thats my fixit til i can get round to fixin them, hopefully will have a look when i get home in a week, have heard its not to hard. not sayin that is the problem though, mayb a description of the noise, when it happens, does it stop etc will help...
