    Default VL air cond dramas

my VL 6 cyl berlina has the factory air cond which worked only for a while then no more cold, lots of compressor oil was on the heat exchanger, suggesting a gas leak, the oil leaks out with the gas.
more gas and dye was added but no leaks could be seen later with the special light, later someone said the oil was very difficult to remove and was usually left there after the leak was stopped, suggesting a previous leak and repair, several experts later, one had a spray that disolved this oil easily

an expert said after testing everything that the compressor had definately had it and a safety switch was shutting it down after a while, due to overheating so big bucks for a new one as no one reconditioned them anymore

next expert after about 15 minutes with much test gear said the compressor was probably OK but the receiver dryer was blocked, causing high gas pressure which shut down the compressor as a safety thing

next expert said all was OK except the radiator fan clutch, which wasnt drawing enough air thru the heat exchanger, causing a gas pressure buildup with the compressor being shut down by it. this seemed unlikely as theres still the electric aux fan which was often on, it makes a roaring noise

anyhow a new fan clutch was fitted, a hell of a job due to lack of space around the bolts or maybe my hands are too big, was almost robbed on the price, its essential to ask for the absolute lowest price with all discounts applied, the extra air being blown back was very apparent

finally a very hot day arrived and the air cond worked perfectly on a long drive with lots of cold all the time, and the engine temp gauge never going high the air cond settings are compliceted and the handbook needs to be closely studied

I suppose the above is a cautionary tale about always seeking a second and third opinion and then a fourth, Ive also heard of a new compressor fitted in error, the problem being loose attachment bolts that allowed it to rattle and sound like the bearings were gone

also there was disagreement as to when the aux electric fan is supposed to operate, the wiring plugs near it were full of mud but cleaning made no apparent difference, these dont seem to be sealed up properly when new
