Had my old VL defected last week. (3 L auto) I didn't even know I wasn't allowed to have a sports steering wheel on it.... It was on there when I bought it 6 years ago
It's the bad defect too. Not one I can just take down to the cop shop.... so I think I have to kiss my VL goodbye.
(It has a few other problems, like rust around the back window, rear seatbelt is stuffed.... and other stuff.... drives great tho....
I even put a $1000 exhaust system on it a couple of years ago (since my original one decided to fall off one day...) Mags and good Yokohama tyres on it tooReckon I'll be lucky to even get $500 for it with the defect on it....
Sorry to bore you. Just had to vent. I've become quite attached to the old girl over the last 6 years![]()
damn thats a shitter,
guess it gives ya good reason to update lol![]()
Thats all right, thats ok, I drive a commodore anyway!!!!
I don't get it - i thought the only defect you could get was 'take it to the cop shop and get it lifted'?? this is WA though, maybe its different over east???
Bad luck about the VL, specialy over a sports steering wheel![]()
good excuse for a new car as salam said butif you've got the money...

In SA there's the cop shop defect and another one where you have to take it to a place called Regency where they go over your car with a fine toothed comb
I bought a VT the other day. Couldn't REALLY afford it, but needed a car. Had to redraw the home loan
But I do like my VT!![]()
thats pretty crap about the defect - but all clouds have a silver lining - hence the VT![]()

ok im a n00b what does "defected over a sports steering mean?"
most sports steering wheels are ileagl as far as the cops are conserned, anything with sharp exposed metal on the steering wheel are defectable, and since 99.9% of sports steering wheels have exposed metal then that kind of makes them a defectable thing...
sorry if this doesn't make sence![]()
Wish me luck guys. I'm going to try to get the defect off tomorrow morning. (Not real confident I must admit). I just hope they are not to harsh, and the things I have to fix don't add up to more than a few hundred bucks...
Still defected
- Too loud @ a max of 98 decibles....
- leaks oil and coolant and something else (trans fluid I think)
- rust in the boot near the bottom of the rear window
- some steering rock boot
- something about the susp. arms on the rear
- rear seat belt broken...
Meh... kind of expected as much....
I think the rust thing is the killer tho. Anyone know how much that sort of things costs? Or can anyone recommend someone in Adelaide?
Would anyone have any idea how much I could expect to get for a 3L auto VL with the above defects and:
- $1000 exhaust put on 3 years ago (Extractors, 2 1/2 inch all the way including cat converter)
- 14 inch alloy wheels with Yokohama tyres (about 70% tread)
- air cond (needs regassing tho)
- some sort of Sony pull out stereo, Kenwood speakers and amp in the boot (not working at the mo. Dunno why it stopped working.....)
- 325,000 Kms on the clock
- runs great
- good paint, except roof and boot (has not been garaged for at least the last 6 years)
- nice and clean inside
I'm thinking not much.... but I don't think it is worth me fixing all the defect items when I'm only going to sell it straightaway anyway.... of course, me getting quotes for the repairs will help me get a better idea of that....
Hey dude if I were you I wouldn’t give up straight away you will be surprised in that your car doesn’t have to be that Mickey mouse to get off those defects my car has been through regency (s.a people know what I mean) 4 times (2 defects ) and more then likely ill be seeing them a few more times its very unlikely you will get it off the first time .but here the first time you take it make sure all your lights ,indicators ,horn, demisters and stuff like that all the real main safety things. Then go over your whole car and fix what you think looks like fixing such as seat belt around $50 from Holden’s . New steering wheel (stock one from wreckers $20) the rust under the rear window unless it stands out like dogs balls they wont really look at it but if you wanna change it its $160 from rare spares, ride hight 345mm from centre of wheel to bottom of wheel arch also get a quiet muffler added in . And any thing that looks a little dodgy try an hide it. There main concern is safety of peoples life’s all I can say is fix the real obvious things hide the minor and you will be all right trust me unless your car is a real bucket of shit it wont take you any more then 2 times but more then likely the second time you take it there it will only be for a couple of faults they found the first time. Plus the second time you go there they will only check the things on the defect paper they wont look over the whole car

i should have read the rest of the posts before i posted mine. but still for ant one else out there i think thats the best way
So, when I take it back for the second time, do they only check the things they listed at regency? Or do they go over the whole car again. Because I'd hate to spend all that money fixing all the things on their list, and then have them pick up something else. Thus costing me another $67.50, and potentially much more in fiurther repairs...
I've heard I can but some sort of baffle into my exhuast to quiten it down. Does anyone have more info on this like how much it would cost?
Well in all honesty for Commodore in that nick I wouldn't pay much more than 1G, and that would be mainly for the good condition interior you mentioned.
OK. So a ballpark figure of $1000 sounds fair. Good. That's pretty much all I was hoping for...
I dont know about S.A but it's illegal to sell a car with defects on it, pretty sure thats right. I'd check first.
Nah, you can sell it. As long as you aren't trying to pass it off as "not defected". Ie. you make it clear the vehicle is defected.Originally Posted by coastvl
I sold my dads car for him defected. People just use them for parts and stuff...
or if they're mechanically minded, they can fix them up then get them registered...
