My brother asked the same question a year ago.
and after a lot of research he found the easiest way.
Cheapest way of getting your vl turbo charged is to buy an imported japanese engine - do a search on google there are plenty of importers that import engines.

He's got an RB20DET engine that bolts straight in. - You get all wiring , sensors , Turbo - The lot for around $1500. These engines have done no more than 20000km and are in awesom nic. ( in japan there rego is heaps more if the engine has done more than 20000km - so thats why there are so many available ).

I have heaps more info if you want to go this way. so let me know.
His Vl is exellent and these engines come with warrenty too.

Youll also have to find someone to put it in also. The only extra cost is an intake cooler.

All these moters are already imported - they are in crates so thats all you have to pay. Im pretty sure they are around $1500 - They are definatly under $2000 anyway! I will find out.

His vl goes excellent. hes a fussy bugger and after alot of research this was the way to go.

The moter he's got is a RB20DET - which is only a two litre moter - but goes like a shower of sh!t
Im sure you can get an RB 3 litre.

Just do a google search and look around - there are many importers - especially over east. we had to pay an extra $200 to get it shipped to W.A

Like i said you get EVERYTHING except an inter cooler.

Im really surprised more people dont do it.

rb20det is a 2liter double over head cam, electronicaly injected and with turbo (meanings of 20det) the rb25dett is the 2.5liter double over head cam, electronic injection and twin turbo.
where the rb30 (vl motor) is a 3ltr single over head cam and electronically injected and makes ruffly half the power of the other two motors

nice, ill have a look around and see what melb has to offor for me. would u guys also know where a good place to get intercoolers? i spose u can get them from autobarn and all those places but i have a feeling that will cost me a bomb. i think a fully recon rb30 with pod filter or induction and lukey exhaust could do me for now as i havent even got my P's yet, bloody vic make me wait till im 18!!!!! wankers.

    Yes that is right.

there is an importers engine price list somewhere on the net. Which shows the availability of these engines in stock and the prices. Sorry im not more helpful but it was a while ago. I remember that the 3.0 litre turbo was pretty pricey thats why we opted with the 2.0 litre. But 2.0 litre turbos seem to be the way to go these days - just look at the wrx!

those wrx's just fly dont they!!
i wonder how much they weigh, i kno my vl weighs 1250kg. u know if its worth getting racings cams fitted? or even over siezed piston, as i could just get the rb30 reconditioned, at the same time i could get these others optioned put in, what u think?

You can do anything you want if you have the money!

I suggested the imports to you because its a good value for money way to go. - and you get an engine that DOES go.
Like i said my brother is bloody fussy and stingy with money and he's happy.

Because these engines are already here in australia im not to sure about the cams and pistons - but it doesnt hurt to ask.

Im sure it would be over $2000

scozzman, ive been thinking over the jap import thingy for a while, and it does seem to be the way to go...will they drop it off the engine off at your mechanic or do you have to arrange transport.. also how much did it cost to fit it?

    Well..

1500-2000 dollars for the engine if you get an import, what are you doing about brakes and gearbox with this?

No matter what you turbo, whether it’s the current engine in your car, or whether you get that engine rebuilt or build an rb30et or purchase an import then brakes and gearbox will have to be considered, the n/a auto's will not hold, and the n/a manuals will hold for a while. But you will have to look at upgrading eventually.

Now, my opinion on the rb20det isn't really that high, I've driven a couple before but the fastest one I'd driven still 'felt' slow.
The 2litre simply doesn't provide enough torque for my likings and is as gutless as an excel until boost hits. In most cases boost is coming on early. But it still isn't enough.

Lets just say that I had a run in with my mates r32 gts-t. Larger turbo, rebuilt with a larger fuel supply, front mount intercooler, manual, brass button clutch and 15psi with a 3" exhaust vs my converted vlt manual, 7 psi- stock cat and 2.5" exhaust I got a lead, he was slowing pulling away at very high top end. 170km/h plus.

Driving his car was just like driving an excel with some plugs missing until boost hit, whereas mine was just like driving an n/a car - and then boost hit.

To convert the n/a you have now - you could probably do it for 1000 dollars if you get your bargains. 1500 easy. Like I said that’s not including gearbox, brakes - driveline etc.

To do it properly with the engine rebuilt, your looking at that figure plus the engine build, 1500-2500 + 1-1.5 thousand.

Depends on your money, in most cases its often cheaper to buy a vlt and do it up, unless you really really want to keep your car because of good paint etc

You were correct up until your last statement.

And I agree with Bax, the RB20DET is very lack luster to drive.

If you just get an rb30et and box there are other things that will need to be fitted to the car like the right ECU and at minimum VL turbo (or V8) brakes and a turbo diff because a turbo motor will spit out a non turbo diff before you can say "hey watch this..."

ive heard the RB20's aint too good as mentioned earlier the boost kicks in early coz of the wieght of the car, meaning ya turbo's gonna have to be rebuilt alot earlier. i reckon you'd be better off saving up alot more money and get it all done properly-decent engine/box (RB25dett, rb26det, RB30DET etc), diff, brakes etc

mwahahahaha classic. c'mon rb20's aren't that bad really for the price, I mean how fast do ya need to go on public roads? I'd be happy with an RB20det halfcut with the box included for less than $2k

    my $0.02

Would be a waste in my opinion.

I have driven an RB20ET. It was a real dissapointment.

The RB20DET was not much better either.
