OK when IN its in overdrive mode, when OUT its in power mode (cancels 4th). When you tramp it in overdrive (button in) it will automatically engage power mode for a few seconds to help you get out of a tight spot etc. I doesn't go any harder with the button out than with it in, leaving it out just chews the petrol and keeps the car in 3RD.
The drain plug thing is covered in another thread, I'll give you the jist of it. Basically there is no drain plug because there are little pieces of crap (broken bits of bands and clutches etc) that get dropped into the pan and just draining and refilling the box would do nothing about getting the crap out. The pan needs to be removed and emptied of said crap and the drive band and overdrive band need to be adjusted, this is a delicate expert procedure that should not be attempted if you do not feel confident, a torque wrench is required.
