yes. a guy up my way did it recently. it's alot of work. you use the head off a rb26dett i think it was. you have to weld up some of the water galleries and i think custom head bolts are needed too. this bloke has a turbo too and his car pulls and pulls and pulls. it's an animal.

so i would have to get custom bolts made up??and i couldnt get a rb30de head and throw that on to it?

to be honest i've never seen or heard of a rb30de. if they are around and it is easy to swap heads i wonder why this bloke didn't do it. anyone else know?

i was doing research on the rb series and came across a website with all the engines in the series, and there was a rb30de/t/t. the rb30de is the same as the rb30e, except it has the twin cams, which gave it around 170kw.

whats the website? i'd like to update my knowledge of the engine for future refence for my own projects. i'd like to put a twin cam in myself but thought it was too much hassle at the moment. if it's an easy swap that would be good.

    heres a website-
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_RB_engine
the rb30de isnt an official engine, its just an rb30 that been converted using the rb25de head...

yeah that'd be the one, not the rb26dett i was thinking. if thats the case you will need to do the work i previously mentioned.

The easiest way to add a twin cam head is to use the RB20DE or RB25DE head. I wouldnt recommend the RB20DE one tho as the valves are to small for the RB30. The RB26DETT is the best head of the lot but the water and oil galleries dont line up along with them running variable cam timing makes the swap alot more difficult.

There have been a few threads on this to my knowledge the following are all the common RB series of engines (there are a few limited run Nismo specials) :
    Single Cam
    *RB20E
    *RB24 (rare)
    *RB30E
    Twin Cam
    *RB20DE
    *RB20DET
    *RB25DE
    *RB25DET
    *RB26DETT

To work out what the engine code means use the following example of a RB26DETT:
RB - Stands for Race Bread
    26 - Stands for 2.6lt
    D - Double Overhead Cam
    E - Electronic Fuel Injection
    T - TurboCharged
    TT - Twin TurboCharged

yea, i just realized there was a few other threads on this. i read that the "RB" does not stand for anything, it just identifies the engine series. but all in all, bangers was right in the first place-i would have to weld up the galerries and drill new ones??? my dad is a welder and boiler maker by trade, so the welding part would be easy done, but whats involved with making new oil and water galleries??

yeah but turbo WITH twin cam is even better. Also you may have to drill new holes for the head bolts too. If the guy whos done it out here ever comes back through work i'll get more details and post a thread on it.

the latest issue of STREET COMMODORES has a VL calais with the rs26 AND turbo. Unfortunately there wasnt much info on how they did it, but i will quote from the magazine now what it says: "Some heads require the block to be machined for oil passages, water jackets and larger headstuds, while others are basically a bolt up fit." ok stop for a second. WTF? note "a bolt up fit." what head are they talking about????they are either tripping out and dont know wtf they're talkin about, or there must be a twin cam head out there that will basically bolt on.

yeah there was never an RB30DE or DET or DETT but its just the rb30 with a different head fitted, either rb26 25 or i think you can use the rb20 but not sure on that one.

i have never heard of an RB20 head on a RB30 bottom end but maybe ppl dont do it coz its easier to do the RB25/26 head. Who knows ..

The flow of the RB20 head is no greater than that of the standard RB30 head

This conversion was achieved using a "naturally aspirated RB25 twin cam head without variable valve timing". This allowed the use of a standard original Nissan RB30 head gasket and no modifications to the cylinder head coolant galleries were required.
    quoted from this site.

It explains how to do it all in awsome detail

you moron you use a rb25de or rb25det head and they bolt straight up to a rb30 block making it twin cam 3ltr, the only thing u need to do is move the cam belt tensioner ....
plus u can also use rb20 det cams in it to pull even more horses out of it

well there is no need to bump a 3 year old topic but i have been thinking about doing this to my car eventually but not turboing it and keeping it n/a. Does anyone know how much it would cost in parts to get a rb25 head and parts to fit?

my neighbor is doing this, rb25 head on 30 bottom end in his r31 skyline... pretty easy like said before the cam belt tensioner needs to be moved, not too much else though...should be a weapon when he's done, aiming for 400-500hp...forged bottom end and gt35-40 etc

    Default Done a million times

This conversion can be done and is quite often done.. You can use all of the RB series heads on your RB30 Block.. But some have advantages and disadvantages.. RB20 Valves are very restrictive so is not commonly used, RB25 N/A Will bolt straight up no hassles.. The RB26 Head just requires head stud hole modification, and the RB25DET Requires you to weld up the water galley's to make it fit... They are a great thing to do and produce GREAT power.. But after i bothered to right all that i just realised if you type into google RB30 DOHC and click the PDF which is the 5th one down, Its a full write up on everything, I have it on my desktop but cant upload it!

    Hope thats helps..
