mate it really depends on how much power ya want behind it! you caould possibly get a stock turbo set up for around about $1500 - $2000! just gotta look in the right places for parts i.e car forums, ebay ect....you can end up spending $3-6 grand on turbocharging your car! just a case of how much you want to fork out!

alright thanks for the info. i was reading that its easier jus to import an engine from japan and put it in then to convert it to turbo.

you'll have a problem doing the conversion unless you know someone who can drill and tap holes out well....the 86 blocks didn't have the holes in them for the turbo feed and drain whereas the 87/88(series 2) blocks did.....

you're only 16 - 17. i wouldn't be worried about a turbo if i was you. cos it's illegal in some states for you to drive one plus you don't have much experience behind the wheel. No offence. when i was your age i just wanted to go fast too but i learnt to drive in V8 fords and chryslers so i knew how to handle size and power when i got my own car.

you would have to get a series 2 block/motor or a turbo motor....the turbo motor can produce more power standard than a converted non-turbo block...but check you're state laws to see if you can drive it....

if u r realy keen on doing the conversion there are a few things u gota consider first. its all good and well having a turbo motor but is the rest of the car up to handle the power difference. is it auto or manual? a standard na auto gearbox will not hold the power of a turbo rb30 for very long even on standard boost. and the na manual is not much better. vl turbos came with a disk brake rear as apposed to drum on most other models excludin all calais, v8's and some belinas. the front brakes on the turbo model have a bigger booster bigger diameter disk and larger caliper and it does make a big difference. as u may have noticed non turbo brakes dont stop real well.
most turbo models also come out lsd. open centre diffs arent real fun in turbo cars. the gearboxes are also different heaps stronger.

if u are really serious about doin the turbo conversion the best way would be to keep ur eyes open for a damaged turbo vl and do the conversion urself. u can find them pretty cheap only bout 3 grand for a manual. but itlll save u money in the long run. its as time consuming job but in the long run u will end up with a much more reliable car with a near unbreakabe driveline.

as VLT86 u have to consider all the other bits to it....its jus not a matter of slapping on a turbo.......

your beter off haveing an auto if u convert as these are stronger then ya normal 5 speed but not by much......u need to convert to rear disc......and n/a diffs only have 25spline axles instead of the vlt 28......and sooner or later u will snap an axle.........and no not all 86 blocks didnt have the plugs...if u wanna go check go look on the right side of your block an there should be 3 plugs u wil be able to undo for your lines.1 oil return down near the sump in the middle and an oil and water line closer to the firewall halfway up the block

and seventh path a converted n/a will have actualy more power running the stock 7 pound then a bog stock vlt running 7 pound becasue of the higher compresion ratio
