    Default electronic tuning

so i was talkin to this guy yesterday and he tells me that my car is running very rich, about 25 percent to rich in his estimation. at about 17 miles per gallon for the older ppl when it should be at 24 ish. about 300ks to a tank and less.

he also suggested that the reason my car has issues at start up is because its running rich. he told me that i should get my car elctronically tuned. not necessarily dyno tuned but elctronically. which i though was a good idea.

what places in WA do this sort of thing. and do any of you have an oppinion on this?

    Cheers,

What did he do to determine all this information?

Electronically tuned, do it yourself. Theres not many ways you can tune the stock car. Timing and AFM is about it as far as I know.

oh he just asked me questions. i told him i was getting about 300 ks to a 54 litre tank. and he said that the 79 hq with a 202 got more than that. and he did some calculations and i told him my car went all gay at start up some times died. and that the fuse box is melted and all the carbon blowing out the back of the car.

    would you disagree with him?

I read that other thread about changing the afm. might try that. dont know about timing so i dont wanna go there.

afm jsut swap it witha nother 1 if u got a spare 1 laying around, timing is symple just need a timing gun and a 13mm spanner to lossn the bolt on the dizzy, then turn till its right and retightn bolt,

if ur computer need tuning it would be easyer geting a s/hand 1 from a wreakers or is there some thing special (memcal) inside ur americas cup version?

um yeh i dont have another afm. i dont have a timing light
i cant afford a new computer. all i wanna do atm is adjust the afm like in the other thread. i dont think theres anything special about my cars computer. americas cup special means , i think, "hey we got all these left over parts" lets stick it into some cars and charge more for them" basically. do you knwo how to take off the little blue cove off the front of the screw on the afm?

Just a wedge it out with a blade screwdriver I think.

I wouldn't disagree with him, but I wouldn't worry about paying someone to 'tune' it. I'd just replace all your ignition points for starters. Leads and Plugs if they're old or haven't been changed since you got the car. Distributor Cap and Rotor button, Water temp sensor- theres a thread about that. Oxygen sensor. AFM to the right resistance and Timing to stock or slightly advanced.

I don't see why it would have to be kept, as its only a screw. But when I got my car serviced that was replaced when I got it back. Not sure why they replaced it. Just dig it out, I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a new one, or even trim down a cork haha

Why do you want it to run slightly richer for starters? When your measuring it, what happens when the car sucks in more air? If it goes down when it sucks in more air i'd reduce it a small bit at idle, vice versa.. But I wouldn't even touch it really.

running it slightly leaner makes the best power but is slightly harmful to your pistons because they don't get a good coating of petrol to keep them cool.
