I noticed one of my nuts on the extractors was missing, so I found it (was sitting under engine mount). So I proceeded to attempt to put it back on but then the stud was looses so I took it out got the nut off and attempted to put it back in. All was going well until It was getting pretty tight and then it got real loose, so I pulled the stud out again and there was metal in the thread of the stud and the stud would not go in tight. I think I have F@cked the thread on the head itself.
Am I gonna need to change the head or can this be fixed/rethreaded?
Its a nightmare.
if the thread is totally buggered, you need to recoil the thread. If its only minorly damaged you should be able to tap it out to bring the threads back up again. But only nip the stud up.
I also have question about the length of the thread on the stud. one end of the stud has double the length of thread, is this normal? like one ends threaded section is longer than the other. I'm thinking I've snapped off half the threaded section on one end.
helicoil set will fix it.
no, im pretty sure one end has more thread than the other.
what a pain in the arse. good luck with it. when i first fitted up the new extractors to my 5litre i had 2 bolts forever loosening no matter how tight i made them. Apparently the trick was to tighten them, run it hot, tighten again, then let it cool and tighten a bit more. seemed to work in the end.
loctight would stop that happening, jsut add it on the thread and it should stay for yrs

wouldnt have in my case. the get them as tight as possible it was neccessary to heat cool tighten. The locktight would have cracked and been useless when i re tightened.
Id rather tighten properly when possible than use lazytight.
Yeah my worst fear the thread is stripped inside the head, exhaust place didn't want to know about it and said go and see an engine reconditioner as they have all the right equipment to rethread the stud hole.
At least the exhaust guy had a good look at it and tried to fix it but its farked.
Rang the engine reconditioner and they said the extractors would have to come off to rethread the head.
Ahhhh well thats life aye. Its not leaking at the moment which is surprising and I will take it real easy and if its not fixed before it starts leaking I wont drive it till its fixed.
Does anyone have the details of the mobile "on site" service called "stud doctor" or "doctor stud" or something like that? I got told to call them but can't find their details listed anywhere.
(sounds like a cheesy male stripper LOL)
If you reckon that's a bit of a bitch you should try loosing one of your bolts (top) out of your break calliper, tap the breaks at 80 and it locks up an ass end JUMPS the opposite way to loss of bolt.Originally Posted by ucwepn
only front discs...top bolt fell out of calliper on the right, calliper falls off the disc (From | to / ) Brake pads compress at an angle on the edge of the disc and locks up instantly, was on a rough bitimum road, not wet...Scared the shit out of me. Couldn't drive it foward so i put it into N then R where it rolled backed making the calliper fall back onto the disc (From / to | ) had to use the hand brake from there on.Originally Posted by ucwepn

the only way u can fix ya thread is plug it up and redrill and tap it, im a trady i do it for my job as part of it but the head would warp due to the heat ally doesnt like it so it would probably need remachining
or u can get these things that u drill and tap out the head to a slightly bigger size and it screws into the hole and then u screw the bolt back into the plug but i cant remember wat there called ill check for u

Short thread is screwed into motor, the longer thread is to allow enough thread length to pick up the extractors/ manifold and to allow enough thread to tighen to side of motor
