    i always thought it was like tappet noise but its more of a tap/knock than a ping?? it mostly happens when first starting the car as there is no oil in the top of the motor until its pumped up there. hence the noise. This is why a good oil is best to reduce the friction and wear of the part = less noise!! hope this is a help, but i maybe wrong.

    incorrect fuel or low octaine
    inginion too adv
    pinking/detonation occures underload at low revs
    it ratteles the valvetrain not good.

    Sorry guys! been out of the loop for a while due a lack of stability in living/working arrangments. But back on the scene with a new beast to match.

    Ahh detonation. It's one of the things i teach aspiring student pilots about in Aircraft Tech lectures. Yea, it ain't a good thing, valve train rattle will be the least of your worries. Destruction of pistons and heads is quite a likley scenareo, trust me i've done it.

    Causes include...
    * Overheating
    * Use of too lower octane fuel
    * Weak/lean mixture
    * Improperly advanced timing
    * Pre-ignition

    Pre ignition is a problem in itself and will occur if valves are worn, spark plugs are too hot, or carbon hot spots build within the combustion chamber.

    If you suspect detonation, the first thing i'd try is a bottle of octane booster or higher octane fuel. Followed by checking the timing. If you suspect a lean mixture, you may want to check out the dirty old AFM.

    Turbo models of course, have a knock sensor fitted so problems should not arise.

    Thats spot on it smashes rings too!!
    It sounds like metal bits and it's an uncontroled burn where as normal ignition
    is a smooth burn..
    If bad enough it's like letting someone loose with a hammer in ur engine..
