am thinking of getting a 2nd hand towbar for my VL wagon, are they all the same for the early commodores?
they are held on by what seem to be coach head bolts with reinforcing plates on top of the floor at the back
If I get under with a spanner, will the bolts turn, or are there square holes in the reinforcing plates to stop this from happening
anyone know?
from the towbars seen on the old commodore wagons at the wrecker , there are several versions, some having 4 or more holes on 1 side and a smaller number on the other side, to allow for some twisting I expect
also saw a very weak looking towbar on a VL sedan with no crossbar, just an arm that went forward and bolted to the front of the boot floor, looked far too weak to me
the VL is said to be weak at the rear with the possibility of heavy towing distorting the back of the floor
I got a tow bar that has no cross bar and they are weak as shite. Mine is held on with 4 bolts (steel plate inside boot has 4 captive nuts). When my mate jacknifed a trailer (and dented the rear qtr panel pretty bad) the tow bar folded easily. I would not reccomend a setup without cross bar. When i replaced the tow bar i got one from a wrecker off a vk.
Probably not the info you are after but hope its of help

Ive since been told that they use coach head bolts with square holes in the reinforcing plates to stop them turning when undoing the nuts from underneath
