    is the earth wire alright?

some radio head unit have a fuse inside the unit itself (though not many). Otherwise disconnect the positive and use something to check power is present. If so then ya know there is power and if not its the head unit. I know this aint overly helpful but at least it narrows down where to look.

edit: if you open the head unit be aware that some fuses look like resistors and are usually a light green

cool. my first thoughts are with a bad ground as mentioned earlier. Note that even if the unit is getting a good negative connection the radio might still not fire up with a bad ground. I got a pioneer unit in my FJ-40 and i had that happen to me. If you are in doubt that the ground is ok just make a new one. Some head units are touchy about their ground.

    good luck
