Angry Auto not changing to fourth

Hey guys, i dont no if this has been posted before but it seems my auto dosent seem to want to change into fourth gear unless it has been driving for a bout 5 minutes in third gear, it only seems to do this some times but is getting more frequent. Does it mean my transmission is on its way out....

    Thanx Nic

That is how it is supposed to be, It has to get up to temperature.

try just changing the transmission fluid, or check if its up to the level, not too low. but like said above, it might need a service

Your trans has a temperature sensor in it. When the oil gets to the correct operating temp it will change into fourth. On colder days it will take a lot longer to warm up. You probably notice it now because summer is over.

thanx i always wanted to know why mine did that but it does it sometimes when ive been driving for ages too... my old man said that it could have something to do with me driving it like a semi-manual... always using the gears, he said i proberly wore out the wire going to the econ button... i told him he was a wanker and he just dosnt like the way i drive
Going where no late model stato/caprice has gone before.... GAME ON!!

It has to warm up to 45 degree before it will change into 4th. If it was changing into 4th before this it means there is a problem with your automatic. The 45 degrees thing is a measure to protect your box from damage by not letting overdrive engage when its cold.

    Model: E4N71B
Type : Four forward speeds and reverse, epicyclic gear trains with clutch operated lock up torque converter.
    Operation: Electronically controlled automatic, hydrolic

Four speed overdrive unit with gear selection controlled by an electronic control unit. The torque converter has a lock up capability operated by a clutch within the converter, engaging at various speeds which are programmed into the control unit. When the clutch is applied, the driven member of the torque converter is locked to the driving member creating positive engagement and when the clutch is released the normal characteristics of the torque converter are used to drive the vehicle using oil as the driving medium.

An additional epicyclic gear train in the front of the transmission combines with a direct clutch, a one way clutch, a brake band and an overdrive cancel solenoid to provide the overdrive ratio

So its not exactly really a 4th gear tho .....Shhhhhhh its a secret LOL
