hey guys and girls.
K My issue.
i've searched the net trying to find out weather or not ethonol is kool for my car (1988 N/A VL) and have come up with nothing.
i decided that i would give it a go and i swear right after i filled up with that in it the car ran like shit for about 1 week then all of a sudden started working sweet as again.
is this just a co-insidence or is there a report somewhere stating that ethonol is not good for the rb30 engine and has anyone been using ethonol fuel in there cars and wat has there reation been to the change.
thanks peeps look forward to hearing peoples responses..
ethanol is basically sugar. i use it as a last resort. when i've used it i get poor performance and really poor fuel economy. you're car probably ran bad as ethanol cleans your fuel system and this can take a while depending how clogged your system is. i wouldn't recommend using it frequently.
if ethonol's effect of the fuel system is like a "detox" then wouldnt that help all round with the cars performance i remember seeing on tele once a advert for it with a website stating all the benifits and a list of cars that can and cant use it but i havetn come across it yet.
I personally won't use it. I work in the fuel industry and a few of the engineers have said they won't use it either. Ethanol absorbs moisture from the environment, not good for your fuel system.
itll run no worries in some cars, and crappy in others. no long term or short term problems have been recorded.
it certainly does not have sugar in it, if it did it would clog the plugs and gum up the injectors. repeat, sugar-free!
my mum runs on sugar, 2 cupa teas in the morning both white with 2![]()

Yeah I saw a show about it once, it is made from refined sugar cane. Petrol companies use it in all fuel and are under no obligation to tell the public (recent ethanol disclosure law scrapped). I think it was around 10% and they didn't have to have a sign up telling you, any more than 10% and they have to tell you.
The world is running out of oil my friends oh yes.

Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
--------------------------------
10%...........94.5 Octane
20%...........Not Recommended
30%...........Not Recommended
Notes: Similar to Methanol/Ethanol.* Isopropyl Alcohol is simply rubbing
alcohol.
How to make your own octane booster (this is the basic formula of one of the
popular octane booster products). To make eight 16 ounce bottles (128 oz = 1
gal):
100 oz of toulene for octane boost
*25 oz of mineral spirits (cleaning agent)
* 3 oz of transmission fluid (lubricating agent)
This product is advertised as "octane booster with cleaning agent *and*
lubricating agent!".* Diesel fuel or kerosene can be substituted for mineral
spirits and light turbine oil can be substituted for transmission fluid.* Color
can be added with petroleum dyes.

Man there's nothing wrong with ethanol as a fuel think about, it has a higher octane rating than petroleum It's used in indy cars that make 900hp + and do 250mph. The problem is normal cars aren't made to run on it. 10% isn't much and if you own any car that was built to run on unleaded. You'd cause much damage running that homebrew octane booster i'd say. In old car pre 86 i wouldn't like to use but but then i wouldn't run standard unleaded in it either. I recondition heads for a living and trust me more damage comes from not using proper radiator fluid (anti-corrosive), thrashing them and overheating than what bit of ethanol would do.
By the way vl heads crack like bitches and i hate fixing them.
i run it in my car and its a calais turbo and i have no problems with it i get more k's to the tank and its smoother cause it burns easier i can only run the 98octane in it and thats wat is in it and its runs ok
if you know the nember of things derived from sugar cane youd get where im coming from.Originally Posted by bangers

you can make ethanol from many plants including corn and mull plants, which i also hear makes your car fly (joke)
any servo can put water in your fuel if they don't check their tank dips properly. when i worked for Shell they did a water test every night. at BP they only checked for water after a big storm and Bogas never checked for water.
bp i was at did checks every 2 days. it can happen anywhere.
i trust you went back and told them? there may have been a leak they didnt know about.
the ethanol used in my servo chain's fuel is made from corn. brings it up to 94-95ron at 10%
i think the indycars run on methanol or wood alcahol which is different and dangerous to handle as it can destroy eyesight
Heres a little fact a lot of people dont know....back in the first and second world wars they used ethanol base fuels in many military vehicles. It was found that the engines in these vehicles were showing signs of wear and damage faster than vehicles that were using non ethanol fuels. This was happening because the ethanol in the fuel was not completely burning during combustion it was then running down the sides of the cylinder, effectivly "washing" the bore of residual oil causing the rings to wear prematurely. This unburnt ethanol also works its way into the sump where it thins out the oil, reducing its lubricating properties.

or sick of whingers. i worked a servo for a number of years and its amazing how many people assume the youngen behind the counter can answer everything.Originally Posted by shiatan
its often impossible to find anything out when working console. i could pull up all the figures on fuel but why would it do it right then and there for some bloke who didnt like the speed of the pump?
if i was concerned id do it later.
we check dips, fax tehm off and the rest is up to the delivery company.
in short, lay off the console ops. they arent paid to hold everyones hand and explain everything to them.
incompetent is the girl who took my position when i left, she thought all the fuel was *somehow* stored together in the LPG tank....
I think it's designed for cars built 2005 onwards.
where do you get that idea mate? its been around since well before 05....
