    Question Air system question.

    Hi,

On my way home from work my VL decided it wont go any further, only needed another 30secs driving from it to get home. Not knowing much about cars i decided i'll have a look and see if i could spot anything unusal which i did.

I havent looked under the bonnet of another VL but on my air system on my vl there is some sort of material which covers a hole which is located just about the engine. This material has broken and i figured that the reason it would start was the fact it was getting in too much air and which also why it had been backfiring. I was wondering do all VL's have this hole with material over it or is it something that the previous owner must have done and just used that to cover it. What i want to know is what is that material thing called? Is it possible to buy one or could i just get a rubber sleeve and totally block the hole off? The hole is perfectly round and looks like its meant to be there. Any help would be great. if you can understand that im talking about. Which i could be more specific but thats the best i can do.

If it is any help, ive added a picture (taken when i first got it) with a circle around the part in question

    Any help would be awesome.

    Thanks

is u car gas? by the looks off the blow back risistor it is,(big circle thing)
where u running on gas at the time this happend?

as the hole could cause the engine to not run as its sucking in to much air ( hot air) in and the gas is having problems combusting,

as for the matiral i cant help u there as i cant see it in person or fell it, is it like wetsuit matiral? more detail needed on the texter

Looks like wetsuit material. I'd have a look to see if any pipes nearby look like they go in there. Because usually on the stock vl induction the pipe from the back of your plenum runs into your inlet. But on there I can't see if it does or not. Because you have a new piece of induction piping made up it looks as though they either missed it out or its fallen out of place.

Ok I can see in the pic the faint outline of a circle, on top of the hose in question.
Your air intake has been changed 4 the gas set up, the bit with the hole in it is probably for a breather on other model cars.
You need to fix this as yes it will cause ur car to backfire ect to much air and running lean!!!
Nice and clean under bonnet with tidy gas system too.
I was confused now I'm just not so sure!!

VL Berlina 5speed. yeh its on gas and i was running on gas when it happened. And yeh, the material is like a wetsuit.

mag: Ahh .. thats what i kinda thought, Its only recently been acting like this. Would it hurt if the hole in question was completely covered? or would the gas system need it there? *sigh* which i could be more helpful in detail, but alas i know jack .. only by what i see .. sorry for this.

try covering the hole up with some duct tape or suterble strong tape, that will not get sucked thought the hole,
or get some1 to place there hand over the hole and u start it, and if it starts then just cover the hole with a suterble object (racing tape or something alike)

I'd be using a piece of rubber or silicon and clamps. I wouldn't trust tape on that still. But thats just me.

the big round thing looks like the device to stop gas going the wrong way through the system (never heard it called a 'blow back resistor'...), and the wetsuit material hole would be the misfire duct.
gas is a tricky setup. too much air and it wont run or the gas escapes, however there needs to be a point where if the system has too much gas or backfires in the intake the pressure doesnt destroy parts.
that is what the wetsuit material hole is about. gas has to be tuned perfectly to run properly otherwise it creates a 'backfire' roughly where your covered hole is.
without that hole, youd blow bits off the intake. so the hole would need to be able to breathe. the material is there to seal it off until this backfire occurs. wetsuit stuff is perfect as it doesnt breathe enough to cause problems during normal operation, will stretch to release pressure and forms a seal over the hole immediately after the incident and takes a long time to deteriorate.

in short, the hole needs to be there.
the material needs to cover the hole tightly but not glued.
your gas/timing system needs a tune up.

yeah, i don't agree with tape, maybe something more along the line of some rubber and tape, maybe rubber and glue, that would probably be the bets option, glue something over it, but test it out before you go closing off the hole

Have a look under the bonnet 4 a metal plate, alloy about 150mm in size riveted in place.
It will tell you when the gas system was installed/ by who/ and in might be a company thats local here in Adelaide, so you can drop it in to show them!!
Also a back-fire protector valve is normally installed in the air cleaner box if you still have yours..
