My external pump is making noise and the engine will cut off when idling. I been running the tank under 1/4 tank alot. Can I buy a junkyard replacement or spend the 400 in parts alone to replace both. And do you really need to change both as the mech says?![]()
The internal will be a bit of a bitch to get to...the noise is normal, for on the way out or stuffed fuel pumps, how often does it cut out, does it chug along, see if you can get a second hand one for cheap if your not looking at spending the dollars, otherwise do both.
Im not completely sure how to get to the internal, do fuel tanks pull apart at all, or are they one in complete? Someone might know. And if in the case of pulling the fuel tank down, when putting it back up put scrap tyre or an antivibe material up there for a sub if got one or wanting one, even for the next bloke, eh![]()
a loud whine from the external pump is normal and not considered to be a sign its worn out, some were noisy from new
max elleries VL workshop manual had good detail on the pumps, some say the sedand dont have an internal pump???
Put the car on a set of ramps, remove the power wires to the external pump. Remove the hose from the ext pump & place in a jar. Have someone turn the ignition to on. The external pump should flow petrol into the jar at a constant rate.If this checks out, hook it all back up & remove the hose from the external pump to the fuel rail. Turn the ignition back on. The pump should flow fuel out at a much faster rate. If this is all working, there is nothing wrong with the pumps. Change the fuel filter. The pump inside the tank is a low pressure unit. Its job is to supply fuel from the tank to the high pressure[external noisy] pump. There is a small piece of hose on the low pressure pump which is prone to decay. If it is decaying & therefore not supplying sufficent fuel to the hp pump, the car will have these symptoms. Replacement is quite simple. Remove 4 screws & feed the old unit from the tank with a little twisting.Be carefull, dont force it out. Also, depressurise the fuel system before removing. Both pumps DONOT require replacing at the same time!
lmao.. i blew my petrol pump this week..
when they fixed it, they said the internal one has been dead for a while so the external one was getn worked to death and finally gave way..
internal pump = $225 band new
external = 2nd hand heap of shit

I wonder what those scales on the top right side of my posts do...
I was quoted $130 for a new internal fuelmiser pump from repco, so shop around
the fuel gauge unit also comes out with the pump
my workshop manual says you need some fuel in the tank or the new internal pump wont prime
